I'm not putting any vegetable oil in her bottle until I hear what the peditrician says. I'm only 25, but I have also heard and seen alot of weird crap too when it comes to babies. But I have never heard of putting vegetable oil in a baby's bottle. Miracle is gaining weight steadily, so I thought that was good. What happens when I put vegetable oil in every bottle, and then she gets overweight?

I also can't wait to hear what the peditrician has to say, lol! This does seem very extreme, and gross too! She is gaining weight steadily, and to me that is good.

Oh yes, sorry.....I forgot she is preemie.

Oh wow......so she sees the pulmonologist more then. Hmm.....it's so frustrating when different Dr's say different things. Good luck.

Thanks for wishing me luck mama! I'll be glad when her peditrician calls me back so I get this straightened out and know what to do.

Quoting Mrs. Black Bitch To You:“ She takes zantac for reflux too, but her peditrician told me to keep putting the cereal in every bottle too.”

I was allowed to stop the cereal after the zantac. I would ask about that at your next appt.

You can go to the CDC website and get her length and weight percentiles. Most pedi's use those for the percentiles that they give you in the office. That's where the chart comes from. That might put to rest the issue of her weight, but like everyone else said, as long as she's gaining consistently, I wouldn't worry too much about that. And personally, there's no way I would put vegetable oil in the bottle.....follow your mommy instincts and I'm sure you won't have any problems!! Good luck, momma!

On June 12th, she had an peditrician appointment, and they prescribed her Zantac for reflux. I asked her peditrician since Miracle is now taking Zantac for reflux, could I stop putting cereal in her bottle, her peditrician told me no, b/c the cereal will help along with Zantac for her reflux. I thought since she is now taking Zantac that she longer needed cereal in her bottle for reflux anymore, but the peditrician told me to keep putting cereal in every bottle. How old were your babies when they started taking Zantac? When you started giving your babies Zantac and stopped putting cereal in their bottle, did your children have any problems switching back to plain formula without cereal? About a month ago when Miracle had a small bout with diarrhea, the doctor told us to give her only pedialyte for 24 hours. But since she is use to having cereal in every bottle, the pedialyte with no cerel wasn't thick enough for her, so she was choking on the pedialyte a little bit. So her peditrican told us whenever she has a bout of diarrhea, to put half of the clear unflavored pedialyte mixed with half of the formula along with cereal for 24 hours, so it would still be a little thicker than pedialyte by itself.

My girls werwe BF no formula. Tori only took a bottle a few times a day at first with her cereal. I stopped the cereal in the bottle about 2 weeks after starting zantac. I didn't see the point in it so I continued on. No more reflux and she ate like a champ. each baby is different and yours was very very early so that may be why the Dr is insisting on the cereal still. I dunno, I personally think it is silly to do both. Ask your Dr what he thinks.

My son was a 24 weeker and has severe BPD. Weight gain has always been issue and his nutritionist had us give him oil in his bottles. We also did higher cal formula. He was on 28 cals/oz plus the oil so that he was getting enough cals to gain good weight. This was the only way we avoided a gtube. The vegetable oil won't hurt her in anyway but it does tend to go to the top of the bottle and my son didnt prefer to drink it that way so I started giving it quickly with a syringe. If they are concerned about weight at all I would ask about upping the calories in her formula by adding more powder before doing oil.It does sound like she is gaining weight well though my son was only about 6 1/2 lbs at 5 1/2 months actual.Hislung Dr wanted him to gain 1/2 -1 oz a day when he was that young but it was also important that he grow so his lungs could continue to healand come off his O2. Even if shes not on O2 still this may be part of the reason and it sound like she wasnt adjusting her age when looking at her size I would ask next time.

My mom put mineral oil in my bottles, an oz to 8 oz of formula when I was a baby. Because I was always constipated. Crazy, huh? I know that doing THAT can kill a baby, because if they choke on it and aspirate the oil it coats their lungs and they can't breath.

I actually have heard of adding vegetable oil to bottles to increase weight gain. Healthy oils, in fact, are supposed to be better for them than whole milk when they switch to that, since olive and canola oil are good fats, and the fat in whole milk is saturated fat. I haven't heard of it in a baby so young though, and wonder if it is safe. I'm curious as to what your pedi will say now!

Also, it sounds crazy, but you know Wendy's "Frosty's"? You can make a drink like that on a budget at home, using some inexpensive ingredients, but the secret ingredient is vegetable oil. I know it sounds crazy, but I used to get these money saving tips and the recipe was in one of the emails I got. It was like a milkshake with no icecream.

I used to give my eldest mineral oil when she was 2-4 because of chronic constipation as well, but it was the whole veggie oil in the bottle for an infant-there has to be a better healthier alternative to gain weight wouldn't ya think?

IDK? I have no idea. I've breastfed all my kids so I honestly have no clue, the twins only had formula for 3 days in the nicu while we were waiting for my milk to come in. I do know that nutritionally certain vegetable oils are much better for kids than the fat in whole mik, but we all give our kids that after age one without a second thought.I know that I take fish oil so that my babies will get the omega 3's that they need, and that the vitamins in vegetables are not absorbable unless you eat them with some fat. But like I said, I have NO idea about the vegatable oil thing for an infant. That's why I'm curious about it.
Maybe I'll google it, LOL, it's 4 am here and I can't sleep anyway.
