I can honestly say there are pros and cons to each enough to where I cannot say I prefer one over the other. I think it all depends on where you are stationed to have a 100% preference.

Like housing out here on base you get way more for your money but if you dont need a lot of space you can save so much living off base. Also, my husband feels like hes actually off work living off base. Like he can take the uniform off and people wouldnt know he is a Marine.

Each time we've applied for housing we've had a house that day but we've also faxed his orders to the central housing office be put on the waiting list as soon as he gets them. But it can take up to 6 months I've heard. Even longer OCONUS.

usually I prefer on base for security. but sometimes it is cheaper to live off post, since on post they take your full BAH each month. this time, hubby was in Korea and I was stateside when he got his orders. I was able to go online then and apply, and because we were separated, we got rushed to the top of the list and had a house 2 months later. it depends on how many bedrooms you need though. smaller houses are more in demand and the list is longer from my experience. we have 4 kids, so our wait is always shorter since we get 4 bedroom houses

right, ours took 2 months because he was going on leave before he reported, so they worked around that. we ended up staying in lodging for 3 days once we got here, but then we had a house.

I can only imagine, I'm really close to my brother and it sucks that I've only seen him a few times in the last few years, I could only imagine how much worse I'd feel if he was also AD and that's a shame about his wife.

Thanks ladies!
My fiance and I are getting married in April & he has to report to his first duty station at the begining of May. I've been looking online for houses to rent and feel like everything I have seen is either brand new huge & out of our price range or extremely old falling apart and 1 less bedroom then what we need and in our current price range..

We actually got lucky & will be stationed 45 minutes away from where we are from & where I currently live. It'd be cheaper to rent here but it wouldnt pan out after paying for gas to drive there 5 times a week. So we are hoping that we can get something on base so he is very close to where he needs to be. We will have 3 kids by then so hopefuly we can get a 3-4 bedroom quick.

Quoting aℓyssa™:" MAN. ADVON just got home and the pictures are posted all over FB. DH decided in November to let his ... [snip!] ... supported that decision. But I'm not gonna lie, I'm totally jealous right now seeing this pictures.    "

Remember this post TWO days ago? The whole reason DH told them to let this guy go instead was because he was going through a divorce. His wife had cheated on him with 7-8 different guys then when he said he wanted a divorce, she literally took his money. Called and cancelled his debit/credit cards and took everything he had out of their savings. Then, I guess this guys mom was supposed to be taking care of everything while he was deployed and come to find out, nothing was taken care of. So, yeah, everyone felt terrible for him and since he was under my husband, he told 'em to send him home instead so he can get his personal life figured out.

Anyways, I guess he contacted FRG behind everyone's back and asked them to contact his wife to let her know when he was going to be home. So, she showed up to the ceremony and he introduced her to everyone as his beautiful wife and that he loves her so much and all that. He had no intentions of actually getting a divorce, the cheating was completely made up, but he literally planned this out MONTHS before and lied so he could go home only a few weeks early (we're guessing he started saying it so early in advance, so he maybe he could have been sent home months ago.. and when that didn't work, he kept fabricating other stories until he finally got what he wanted).

As soon as y'all get married have his orders amended to show that you are going to be stationed there with the kiddos so that he can fax his orders into housing and put you on the waiting list. That way you dont have to get on the waiting list when you arrive.

I'm so beyond livid. Not even that DH COULD be here right now, just at the fact that his guy is actually a friend of ours. So, not only did he lie numerous times to the army. But, I've talked to him several times to help him "cope" while they've been over there, along with DH. I never in a million years would have thought it was all a giant lie.

ridiculous... I knew a guy who did something similar when we were stationed in germany. our guys were deployed, and when my friends hubby came home for r&r he kept hitting on all of us. he went back. when we told her, she accused all of us of lying, but then it came out that it was the truth and had happened before, and she told him she was gonna file for divorce. they let him come home "to work it out" because he said he was suicidal. he got there, and they stayed together for about a month. one night they got the MP's called on them and were both charged with a domestic. he got sent to the barracks for 72 hours. she broke the order and visited him. the army revoked her command sponsorship, and sent her home. he didn't get back on the plane to go back to iraq.. went awol. he got to spend the rest of their deployment working for rear d.. not even being held or punished. when they finally held his hearing for the domestic and awol, his wife flew in to sit on his side. he got out and they went back to the states. they lived happily ever after, until he cheated on her again.

Whoa... I want to say I can understand not sharing exact details but you guys are family. What I can't understand is not even being there to greet him when he returns. She can go wherever when he's on deployment--a lot of wives return home and that's fine--but to not be there when he returns is ultra smurffy. I can't imagine how he must have felt.
