re: Military Families

posted 28th Sep
I have a few questions. Heres the thing my fiance leaves the 29th for basic training. When he signed up we didnt know I was pregnant. Now heres the problem his first recruiter told him it was against the rules for us to get married because I have two dependants and I would be a dependant on his health too which you can only go in with two dependants total. & that we would have the week that he gets back from tech school to get married and they will send all of our stuff for free to our new location. Now his new recruiter just told him that we HAVE to get married on one specific day after basic training or they wont ship my stuff to the new location. He keeps coming back with different information and it's freaking me out because i dont think he knows what he is talking about. Right now I get assistance on housing and if I married him that soon then we will be kicked out but his new recruiter says that they will pay for our housing while he is in tech school.. Is that true? I dont know what to believe anymore. Also his last recruiter says they help pay for food? I just want to know some of the basics what they pay for how this works because I am beyond confused.

ive never heard that rule about going in with two dependents and i was army and now im on the marine corps side. you should get another opinion from another recruiter.

If it's Air Force (which I am gathering it is since she said tech school), the information is absolutely correct. I got pregnant when DH was in DEP and the recruiter "heard nothing" when we told him because he didn't want to have to deal with the waiver process.

The service member gets BAS, basic allowance for subsistence. It's like $323 or something like that a month. It's for food for the member. It seems like when DH was in basic and tech that they took that, though, to cover his meal card or whatever they called it.

BAH is basic allowance for housing. When DH was in tech school we got it, but I've seen people recently saying they don't get the BAH until after the fact after all training is completed in the form of backpay. If you got married after tech school, you would be responsible for moving yourself, kids, and stuff to his duty station. Before tech and you should be on his orders to the new station so the military will cover it.

Just get married ASAP after he graduates from bootcamp. It's called "married en route," I had a TON of people do it from my company, and they were fine. As long as they know your intentions

Its been this way as long as I've known. There can be waivers for some branches, if your prior service and what not. But mostly, they don't want people with a ton of dependents joining and then struggling on E1/E2 pay

Hi ladies
I have a question for ladies stationed at camp Pendleton, which areas are the best and safest to live in over there? I'm getting married soon and the hunny wants to start looking but wants to know what areas to look in
Thanks

On base or off?
On base I prefer DeLuz housing, San Onofre, and Del Mar but Del Mar is officer housing(I'm not sure your husbands rank) If your husband works on Mainside then DeLuz would be a short commute and if he works by SOI then San Onofre would be a good fit. But if he works closer to the main gate Pacific View is good as well. We've looked into moving there if we ever move back on base. Big houses, huge vaulted ceilings over there.
Serra Mesa and Stuart Mesa 1 are the only ones I'm not too fond of. Serra Mesa are apartments usually for the newly enlisted(lower ranks, I hate that term but its the easiest one to use) Its nick named Scary Mesa because the MPs go over there a lot.

Off base I like the Oceanside area, San Marcos(would be a commute possibly) and Carlsbad. Its pretty expensive to live off base though when you factor in utilities. You definitely get the most for your money living on base but you can find a few gems off base too. We currently live in a townhome complex right outside of the back gate. Its nice but by saving some money we give up a lot of space so you just have to figure out what will work best with your family.

Also, the base is having a lot of move in specials where they will pay you to move it if you've never leased with them before. Most places on base accept pets now too. There had been only a few to accept them when we first moved out here in '07.

He's Is lower rank, he just got done with SOI. And thank you so much we didn't plan on living on base but if its better to I might have him consider it. Thank you
