question about cytotec

posted 20th Jun '07
i know this is probably a stupid question, but i just had a miscarriage (my first one and first pregnancy) so i dont really know much about this at all. i was just wondering if any of you had taken cytotec (misoprostol) to pass everything, and if so, would that be a better option than a d&c?

I am sorry to hear about your miscarrigae. I wish I had an answer for you but I had to pass everything naturally. I'm not sure.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

Cytotec is a little pill they put in you to induce labor. How far along were you when you miscarried?? I'm not sure why they would give you Cytotec unless you were farther along and want you to deliver.
I just had a baby 2 and a half months ago and that is what they induced me with.

I'm not sure for sure if this is what they gave me when I lost my son but I think it is as "misoprostol" sounds familair.

With both my losses my cervix closed and the placenta was still inside.....the first time around I got a d&c but this time around they gave me something so that I could avoid getting one....I preferred not getting a d&c even though the cramping was very painful but at least I was alert.
Hope this helps.

I REALLY hope you get this before you make a decision....
I am so sorry for your loss; i know theres nothing i can say to make it better; i hope you find the thing that does.
I had a missed m/c at (well, thought I was 9wks 6days) but our baby stopped growing at 7wks 1 day. so I opted to take the cytotec b/c i wanted to avoid a d&c.
Cytotec is actually used to prevent ulcers when you are taking long term NSAID (motrin/ naprosyn); one of the side effects is uterine contractions.
Anyway...
that was the most horrible physical pain i have ever been through (and the way my heart was feeling didn't make it any better).
My doc had even given a narcotic to take and that did nothing for the pain i had. Not only that, the night after the first dose (theres 2), I was up all night with the squirts and as if that weren't bad enough, i was puking like that crazy girl from the exorcist.
at one point, i was laying on the floor by my bed, just moaning and groaning.
it was really horrible.
to top that all off, i had to take any tissue that I passed to my drs so they could make sure it was fetal tissue. Well, it turned out that it wasn't so I had to go back in for another u/s and more blood work.
I think cytotec works in like 75 or 80% of the time in getting everything out. Luckily, it turned out that I had passed everything, it just wasn't what i had turned in.
I don't know if its like this for everyone, i certainly hope not.
My advice is just to do the d&c, get it over with.
I guess you could just do it naturally but that has its complications as well; and you never know how long it will take.
I am so sorry you have to go through this; it happened to me 3 wks ago exactly.
I wish you all the best and if u need to talk or have any questions pls email me.

I just had a miscarriage on the 11th of June and on the 12th of June I had a cytotec induction. I was 14w1d. I opted for the cytotec bc I have 3 previous c-section scars and I have less of a risk doing it that way then if I had a D&C, bc I was into my 2nd trimester my uterus was really soft and the scraping they do when they are inside you can cause terrible scarring and could cause you to not be able to carry a child again. Unfortunately I was one of the 25-20% that had to have the D&C anyway. They put the cytotec inside your uterus and if you are lucky like me you stay in the hospital till its over, they did they D&C when they couldn't get all the placenta out. Unfortunately the narcotics they give to lessen the pain aren't very effective, but I did have the choice of a epideral if I wanted one but I refused, up until right before the baby was born I was fine, right before i passed the baby I started to have very painful cramps. But once the baby was out I was fine. The D&C was harder on me because hte intabated me(stuck tubes down my throat) and when it was over I was puking blood and my nose was bleeding badly. I hope this helps.

thanks for the advice! i decided that it would be better for me to get a d&c since i REALLY do not deal with pain well at all and i was just a little scared about the cytotec. my d&c was friday and all went well. ive had basically no bleeding or cramping which the doctor said would be normal since i was not very far along (the baby died at 5w4d)
