Risk of Eczema
posted 21st Nov '06
I'm due with my first baby on Feb 18 and I'm very excited. The only thing is I'm worried that my baby might suffer from eczema because it runs in my BABY daddy's family. I want to know if I breastfeed will that might help prevent the baby from inheriting it?

I was wondering the same thing, my niece and nephew have severe eczema. I'm hoping it's not hereditary, it's plan miserable for kids. Let me know if you find out.

When it comes to that I think that if the baby is going to get it s/he will get it. My sister in law didn't nurse her first and she does not have eczema (yet.. she's only 4). She is currently still nursing her second and she does have it (she's 8 months). so I really think it's a flip of a coin.
Take care,
Ashley

It's not too uncommon. It just started showing up for me around age 16/17, so I have known about mine for 3-4 years now and some years it is worse than others and it really only acts up in the winter. What brought it on for me was tanning beds.
My mom has had it for a long time and so has my aunt and a few of my cousins on my mom's side.
Mine is in no way severe and not really bothersome for me right now. I have an active spot on my left hand and a small spot on my left leg. I used to have medicine for it when it was worse but I haven't seemed to need any for a few years. I doubt there is any way to prevent it. I was breastfed as a baby and I have it. My twin brother doesn't have it though, so really it just happens I think.
