baby and swimming

how old do you all think my baby should be before we let him in water? my family is really big on swimming and everyone keeps asking me when I'm going to let my son in the water. he's 4 months old. I myself am scared to let him in the water, even with the floaty things that they have for babies that are that young. this past weekend my fiancees mother put my son in the pool, and when i found out i was hysterical. but i don't know... I'm just scared out of my mind that it isn't safe. besides, my fiancees mother is such a careless person. thats the main reason i was mad. but anyhow, when is it safe for a baby to be in the pool (under supervision [by mommy, ofcourse)

I took my daughter into the pool a little before she turned 4 months. My big concern with taking her in was I wanted her to be alittle older for sunscreen (a BIG must with us pasty white girls. lol) AND I wanted it to be warm enough and everything....she has a lower than normal body temp so she gets cold easily.

Evan went in for the 1st time last weekend. But honestly, if it was warmer out he would have went in sooner. I think at 4 months he's more than ready to check out the water. We got the little floatie w/a sunshield on it. I got a crab at Target. He's still a little small for it but he does like it. The Dr. told us we were ok to start sunscreen. Since he's extremely white like me and has sensitive skin I was a little worried but I bought the Hawaiian Tropic 60+ Little Faces and I really like it.

I say go for it - but make sure whoever has the baby is extrememly careful.

I'd really like to teach my baby swimming and all, but I also want to wait til she can sit up without support. Personally I think it's easier that way, since I always think I might strain her arms if she wiggles too much. Between 6-9 months, starting swimming lesson is not bad. She's already doing the freestyle with her legs, and it's really fun.

Addy went in to the pool for the first time at 3 months...about a week ago. I would suggest getting a float like this one in my picture. it is available for 12 dollars at Babies R s and its great, b/c it is also a mommy float so you can control it AND you can float too!!!

wow, i feel bad now. i brought my son in last week sometime and he's 6 weeks old now. it was warm out, covered him in sunscreen and kept a onesie on him. he loved it. but i live in florida and it's more than warm enough. he loved it. only thing i was worried about was the chlorine on his skin, but it didn't bother him at all.
