Need advice...c-section v's vag. birth

posted 2nd Jun '09
Ok this may be long winded...sorry

The hospital I have no choice but to give birth in is insisting that I have a c-section. Their reasons are:
1. I had a major tear last time and they are concerned about the scar tissue re-opening.
2. I am diabetic and have high blood pressure.

My arguement to them is that I would rather have an episotomy than c-section and that I have had diabetes and high blood pressure for almost 10 years and it didn't stop a vag. birth last time !!

Here are my pros and cons..

Pros of c-section
My husband is a long distance worker, a c-section would mean that I can at least plan to have him home, with out this it is entirely possible that I would be having a vag. birth on my own and coming home to an emtpy house with NO support network for up to 3 days.
It does lesson the chances slightly of any complications to bubs and me.

Cons
I refuse to bottle feed, so does anyone have feedback on breastfeeding after a c-section ?
It is major surgery....takes longer to recover and I have 2 other kids.
I plan on having more kids, so obviuosly it would be c-section from here in as the hosptial doesn't beleive in v-bacs.

I don't know what to do....fight or give in   I don't really care about the pain associated for me or the recovery I just want to do what is right but at the end of the day I am stuggling with the idea of coping with major surgery and a newborn and am wondering if that will affect the baby adversely.... does that make sense ?

Any input or advice is welcome   Thanks girls

That's a tough one only you can decide, unfortunately..

But if I were in your position, I'd try my hardest for a vaginal delivery.

Honestly, I didn't think my c-section was that bad. I healed relatively fast and overall didn't find that is was that awful of an experience.

:::Watching:::   I have a similar situation - I have GD, and at my last appt they said she hasn't grown in 2 weeks (I've been losing weight since I went on the low carb diet), so they want her to come between week 39-40 (I'm at 38 tomorrow).  My doc said that unless I progress naturally (I'm 0 dilated/0 effaced) all an induction will do is give me contractions for 30 hours then I'll have to be cut anyway.
I'm in the same boat - not really wanting a c-section.  :\

I personally would go for a vaginal birth again. You can refuse a c-section. Maybe find a different doctor?

I tore with my first and didn't tear at all with my second.

If I know the exact date, then my husband can be home for at least 2 weeks.....not knowing will put me in a situation that means he might not be home for a week after the birth.....and there is no one here to help in any way

Me too.The c-section itself had problems but recovery was a breeze.

ummmm...there are no doctors involved here, I will get what ever the hospital decides to give me in terms of a doctor. We don't have any ob's in this area right now...... so it's all midwifes   A surgeon will attend to me at the c-section, but not an ob !!

Yeah I guess that is my other fear...that I push for them to let me try vag and they decide after I am exhasted to do a c-section anyways.....

and in this country/state you CAN NOT refuse a c-section if a doctor orders it

I would listen to your doc, if I was in your position. If they say it's the best thing for you, then you should do it.
They are the professionals, after all. They deal with situations like these day after day, and wouldn't advise something to you unless there was a good reason for it.

But, of course the decision is fully up to you. Have you asked your hubs what he thinks about the situation? For me, the best advice always comes from my husband.

I haven't seen a doctor at all for this entire pregnancy, which is not unusual in this country. My husband tells me to do what ever I feel most comfortable with   LOL

Hi I wanted to respond to your breastfeeding concerns.I've had 3 vaginals and 1 c-section.I've breastfed all of my kids and can honestly say that nursing after the c-section was no harder than the other three. The bikini cut is so low that that baby isn't really near it.I used a boppy just to help with supportIt really was easy .If you want to breastfeed,INSIST that the baby gets no bottle/artificial nipple unless really medically necessary, that will make it easier.Noone I know of whos breastfed after a section has really had any issues with it.Oh and another thing having a section does not mean your milk will come in later. Each person is different but the important things are to be persistant with nursing ,stay hydrated and to just RELAX.I know its easier said than done but will makes things alot easier.
