PUPPPs rash (with PICS!!!)

Right at the end of my 36th week, I began to notice that my stretch marks were really itchy...for a few days, that seemed pretty normal...

37 weeks I began to realize it was itching more than it should, and figured I'd bring it up with my doc at my 38 week appointment (no 37 week appointment).

Two days before my 38 week appointment (I was 38 weeks 3 days), I messaged a friend to whine a little...she mentioned PUPPPs. I looked it up, and it sounded like EXACTLY what I was dealing with. I had to e-mail my doc and BEG for help RIGHT THEN. He called me a few hours later and said he'd call in a scrip for a cream and some benadryl for me and assess it at my appointment. Good enough for me!

The cream did okay for the first couple of days and helped with the itch as long as I stayed well coated...the doc confirmed that it was PUPPPs and a pretty decent case of it too. YAY!  

So, that was at 38 weeks...and here are the pics from THREE DAYS after I saw my doc. I woke up 2 days after my appointment COVERED in the rash from collarbones to toes...it got worse over night so my hubby took some pics to e-mail my doc (because its impossible to get in to see him on short notice). The doc called in some stronger scrips and notified L&D that if I called them at ANY point they were to give me another stronger drug if I thought I needed it. I had to call them for the stronger drug the next day...

Luckily, the rash is still there, but MUCH less intense now because of the meds...which I've been able to mostly wean myself off of so that I only take them right before bed because the itching is worst at night. Unfortunately, it still covers ALL of my body...and its HARD to not scratch!!!

So, thats my story of PUPPPs...heres the pics!!! Sorry so long!!!



My belly stretch marks all inflamed and swollen and raw from the rash (normally they're very pale, but the rash has made them RED!) Don't mind my bathing suit bottoms, hehe.

Yeah..the whole leg...don't mind my fat-ness...my legs were VERY swollen

Don't mnd the doggy butt...my ankles got it the WORST!!! So bad the skin cracked and bled!

It never turned bright red on my arms like it did on my legs, but it IS there and it IS even MORE itchy than my legs (except my ankles). OUCH!

My back...hubby took this wile I napped on my bed (next too a big pile of clean laundry, haha). I never knew how bad it was back there because I can't scratch back there if I wanted to!


What got me through was sitting a bathtub full of cool water, Atarax to sedate me and help calm the reaction, and a steroid cream applied twice daily. Also, Baby Magic lotion. All other lotions made me itch more.

When I couldn't bathe, I kept cottonelle flushable toilet wipes handy and wiping my skin down with the cool wet cloths could calm the itch for a while.

OMG... what is puppps?

so can it start out just on your belly??
because my stretch marks have been burning and itching like CRAZY! i've tried everything. and nothing helps.

Sounds like PUPPPs to me. It started only in my stretchies....then was just on my lower belly...then i got a teeny spot (like nickel sized) here and there...then it was EVERYWHERE over night.

If your stretchies feel dry, scaly, or bumpy, its probably PUPPPs and the burning is TERRIBLE

oat meal bath!!! put a cup of regular oatmeal in a nylon or light soak and let it soak in the water. the oatmeal can help to calm your skin. You can also put a bar of soap in with it (wigh i think works better) and use it as a soak/wash. it also works wonders for baby diaper rashes (later on)

I don't have PUPPS, but I can relate to the itching. I have ICP. In ICP there is no rash, you itch from the inside and it is very intense. It is a pregnancy liver condition where your bile pools into your blood stream. It can be very harmful for baby and cause fetal distress, stillbirth, meconium staining, and several other issues. The itching is HORRIBLE. With ICP, no creams or antihistamines work because of it being in your blood stream, but there is an Rx for the bile issue that does help.

Looks exactly what i had. i was induced at 38weeks cause how bad mine was. & mine went away 3Months PP!!! hope yours clears up as soon as you have you LO..

Its a rash that about 1% of pregnant ladies get. Its mroe common in multiple pregnancies (ie twins), first time pregnancies, pregnancies with large babies, pregnancies with boys...

They're not sure exactly what causes it. some places say its KINDOF an allergy to the baby's DNA or an allergy to the hormones and such that our bodies produce...other sites say other things...

The ONLY cure is delivery...and I'm 4 days from my due date and can't wait til he's OUT so I can hold him and stop itching, haha.

yeah the ones on the bottom of my belly are really red and also bumpy.
i'm going to the hospital tomorrow for my weekly nonstress test though, so i'll ask them about it.
i've heard of PUPPS before but i never even thought of that being the reason.

It did NOTHING for me. I took like 4-5 of those bths a day...after 3 days i quit. It felt good IN the bath, but as soon as I stepped out it started again...

It works for some people though!

Cholestasis.
i was tested 4times for it because thats what they thought i had thats how bad my PUPPP was they kept thinking it was Cholestasis. & i was in hospital 2times becasue if it.
are you being induced? i was gunna at 37weeks but i held out 1 more week.

nothing worked for my itching too - scratching did haha but made it worse. lol.


why do our bodies do this to us!!

I hope you've got the scrip and that its working well! My doc made me e-mail him a pic to show him the rash because he was worried about my liver, haha (he was out of town and couldn't see me and didn't want to make me wait a minute longer than I needed!)

They should try being heavily pregnant & have PUPPP's ! lol. i was also induced cause we were both severly dehydrated & he stopped moving pretty much - turns out cord was around his neck twice. (lucky i was 2weeks early)

Do they look like welts(like an allergic reaction)? I broke out 2 days after giving birth with welts all over even my face and scalp We thought I was allergic to the pain meds. then I got them again at 12wks PP. I didn't have any meds then and I can't figure out what it is. I've never been allergic to anything in my life.

I have never heard of PUPPPs, but maybe it was that. Is it just a pregnancy thing or can you get it PP?
