Can I have a home birth if I'm covered by Medicaid?

posted 27th May '09
I've been thinking of doing a home birth but I'm covered by Medicaid. I've heard they do not cover Midwives. Anyone who has any knowledge about this would be appreciated.

Not in Missouri-- I don't know about any other state though.

You'd have to find a midwife that would do a homebirth that takes medicaid.

You have to find a midwife that takes medicaid. Not all do. Double check if your particular state insurance allows you to have one. WI does.

Call the number on the back of the card and ask them.
They should have a website too.

I believe Ohio covers Midwives as well.

They don't cover it in FL. Check with your case worker, but most likely not.

I would go for that. My mom is a little uncomfortable with me doing a home birth because if something were to go wrong the baby and I would not receive immediate medical attention. But I plan on doing a natural birth so an OB is not necessary. Hopefully I can find a Midwife who accepts Medicaid.

You can still do a natural birth using an OB. And if you have any complications at all during your pregnancy your midwife will refer you to an OB.

I know that. I'm just saying that an OB isn't necessary UNLESS there are complications.

It's a lot easier to do an all natural birth with a midwife, honestly.

my point exactly!!

OBs will just boss you around because "they know best". A midwife wants to hear what your birthing plan is and will help you stick to that plan.

I hope you can find a midwife that takes it! I hate that there are none in Missouri!!
