re: Can I have a home birth if I'm covered by Medicaid?

Quoting Kat VonYe:“ my point exactly!! OBs will just boss you around because "they know best". A midwife wants to hear what your birthing plan is and will help you stick to that plan.”

My OB doesn't boss me around, he listens to me, but to each their own.

Midwives are awesome. I switched to mine after visiting 2 different male OB's. I just felt so much more comfortable with my Midwife. Plus, she's had 3 children and I liked the fact that she had that more personal experience. Doctor's can deliver babies all day long. But they will never know exactly what it is like to birth a child.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying they won't listen. They just tend to think that their way is the better way. An OB is always good for younger girls who are scared and don't know what to do. Its comforting to them to have someone with all the answers. I, on the other hand, prefer to be the one telling someone what my birthing plans are and making sure they stick to those plans.

Perhaps you just got lucky. Both of the OB's I have had definitely have their own way of doing things. They might listen to your concerns but that doesn't mean you'll get to do things the way you want them. For example my OB requires CONSTANT fetal monitoring and an IV during labor. Those two interventions right there make it harder to have a natural L&D because you can't move around as much (if at all.)

My doctor is a woman with three kids and she is great. But OP you can find a midwife that take Medicaid. I had it with my first and they have two midwives in the practice where my OB is, so they would have taken it. It's in Montgomery.

Actually, MO is a state that does allow home births. There are 3 types of midwives: certified nurse midwives, certified midwives, and certified professional midwives. A certified nurse midwife typically will never do a home birth, only hospital. They are still great though! And Medicare does cover there services in 50 states. Certified midwives only accept medicare in New York, New Jersey, and Deleware. Certified Professional Midwives accept Medicaid in 10 states, more if you plan on using a birthing center. To find out if your state is covered, visit NAPCM.org.

Since you're in the south, check out the farm in TN. Pretty sure they accept Medicaid. In CO Medicaid only covers homebirrh if the midwife is a CNM. DEMs aren't covered.
