Pregnant after Gastric Bypass surgery!
posted 19th Nov '06
Hello!
I had Gastric Bypass surgery 7 months ago and have lost 96 lbs so far! Now I'm pregnant! I was concerned at first but my surgeon assured me that "we would get through it" as long as I am monitored closely. I have my first OB apptointment on Dec 12th and hope that the OB does not have a problem with it. My bloodwork is perfect (checked every 3 months now it will be 2 months) and my health is great.
Has anyone experienced the same thing? If so, did your OB consider it a high risk pregnancy?
Thank you!

I haven't personally but a friend of mine had gastric bypass surgery, she had a baby after she lost over 100 pounds. She had trouble keeping things down, but the baby came out 6 lbs. She is pregnant again with her second baby, this one with no complications what so ever. So it can be done! Good luck to you. And awesome that you lost 96 lbs, that is GREAT!!

I am 15 weeks pregnant with twins and I have had gastric bypass also. I have also had a lower body lift. I weighed 250 before the gastric bypass and 130 before getting pregnant. Now I weigh 140... My OB said the only thing his going to monitor my closely for is an incompotent (<-sp?) cervix. That is where in the 2nd trimester your cervix just dialates on its own... with no warning and no pain. But other than that he said he has had many post-bariatric patients that have had perfect pregnancies.

I had gastric bypass surgery 2 years before I got pregnant this last April. I had lost over 100 pounds before I got pregnant this time too. For me this pregnancy has been a wonderfull experience. This is my third child and so far the only "normal" pregnancy I have had. The first two I had pre-eclampsia... very tiring being on bed rest for two months.
My doctor isn't worried about anything except the pressure head aches I have been getting lately when the baby moves. She said she never heard of such a thing... in a regular pregnancy or not. Of course, I am 33 weeks pregnant... so the baby is pretty big.
Don't worry though and remember that doctors KNOW what they are doing. Just stick to the way you were taught to eat. Protein FIRST!! If you can't handle milk you can try some of the carb-free (sugar free) yogurts... they work really well if you can handle them.
Remember to take it one day at a time and I am sure you will come out of this healthy and so will the baby.

have any of you had a tummy tuck or a lower body lift before getting pregnant? I am having the worst pains in my lower abs. I am sure it is just where the doctors tightened my muscles... But it is REALLY painful! Is this normal?

i had gastric bypass surgery Sept of last year so i got pregnant 7 months after sugery. I freaked in all honesty because i was still in the process of loosing weight. Before surgery i was 257 and when they weighed me at 7 wks i was 162 lbs. Right now as in at my appt today i weighed in at 164 lbs. i went down to 150 lbs and then finally started to gain weight. so far i have gained 12 lbs and my midwife would like me to gain more but i tell her i eat and to me i think its all baby because im all belly. i am measuring normal and HIS heartbeat is strong. so all looks well.
The only thing really going on with me is that i am always in pain. my inner thighs, vagina, lower belly and back ALWAYS hurt. My midwife told me today that i wont go full term, i am already thinning out and im dialated to 1cm. another thing is this is my 6th baby so we are sure that this lil boy will come before his due date but i pray he doesnt come too soon because i dont need a preemie.
So i guess it just depends on you and your body. i guess my body is shot after all it has been through. i think i will end up having a nice xmas present for myself because i think i will have him before xmas.
BTW they dont concider me high risk, it just depends on the person i guess and i have alot of issues so unless you have a real medical problem i dont think you would be high risk.
Good luck with everything~!!!

Hi!! I had gastric bypass almost 8months ago also and I just found out I was pregnant too! Worried because they say you shouldn't get pregnant till after a year. My gyn changed my appointment to next week because of the surgery, but she did say it would be a high risk. Besides my age, I also had diabetes but it's gone since the surgery.

Well I went for my first visit today & my doctor said it would be fine. She said their focus was to make sure the baby got enought nutriants due to the surgery. So I have to go for alot of early test & lots of blood work!! But some test have to do w/my age..

I am 39 years old and last november I when under gastric bypass. I was 250 lbs and now I am 160lbs. I would like to get pregnant but my doctors said that I should wait 18 months before I get pregnant. I will soon be 40 years old and by then I will be over 40. My question is should I try to get pregnant now thatit may work since Ihave lossall the weight or should I wait18 months and be almost 41 years old? I don't have any children and now I would like to have one. Does anyone has gone througth this dilema before and how was it? Please reply your opinion on what should I do or don't.

I am too pregnant after having Gastric Bypass surgery. I was 343 lbs before surgery in Jan 2009, and have lost 140 lbs to date. I became pregnant in September, so i was 9 months post op. I had my first appt with my OB on Nov 1st and they are not considering me high rish because of the surgery. not sure why.. seems like i should be.. but we'll see how things go. I had pcos prior and after 15 years of marriage and the surgery.. i am now expecting. We couldnt be happier. I am 11 w 5 days today.. can't wait to get outta the first trimester!

had gastric bypass 8/07 and 8 mths later was preg. WHAT a shock!! I had a terrible first trimester, always sick, dizzy and put on bed rest from 4 wks preg.
But, I made it, and gave birth by c-sec to a health girl! Now, I am preg again with twins! I just turned 9 wks and so far, I havent had 1/3 of all the issues I have had with the first one. I am extremely tired, but I think thats more of my age, 34. I also take the chewable vitamins, b-12 shots monthly and iron supplements. I have had issues with milk since op, makes my heart beat fast and feel sick, so I try to eat the sugar free yogurt. The best advice I can give to all you moms post op, is listen to your doc! get lots of sleep, and eat! Dont worry about weight gain.I only gained 14 lbs with my first preg, they weighed me right after birth and lost 18lbs. I seem now not to get enough in for the twins, I have to eat every 2 hrs or I become ill. Anyone have same issues???
