Birth Plan ?

posted 15th May '09
i was wondering if anyone knew of a site where there is a good outline for a birth plan etc. I want to write mine up this week but I think I would do better ifI had something to go by etc. The only one I've seen personally was cool because you clicked on options and filled in blanks etc and at the end it would email it to your email only problem was that i didnt feel like it covered much and it left a lot of things out.

Any suggestions?

Are you going to take a birth class? They gave me ones there. They were really pretty and since my class was affiliated with the hospital and had all the hospitals rules and stuff on it to make it easier.

I am so proud of you for wanting to have a birth plan. I was in too much pain while i gave birth with my first to go by any kinda plan. With my twins one was breach so my birth was chosen for me...a c- section. Then this time around my doctor wont do vaginal after c-section, so i am stuck with a c-section again. If you find a website i wanna see it too. Maybe i can plan som part of the birth

My own personal opinion is that making a detailed birth plan sets you up for failure. If things don't go EXACTLY how you envision it, you're going to think negatively about the birth experience or beat yourself up or whatever. To ME it's best to have a general idea of what you want (how long you want to labor naturally, if/when you'd like the epidural, who you want in the room, general type stuff that you can tell your nurses when you're admitted) and go with the flow. But that's just my 2 cents for what they're worth.

Psh.

I was just given a sheet of paper that had options I could circle.. like

If I wanted to go vaginally or cesarian,

If I chose pain meds did I want the epi or did I want it through an IV

If I wanted a Mirror, birthing ball, option for a tub.. etc etc.

I can only tell you this. Go in with an open mind.

I fortunately was able to have my birth the way I wanted. Natural, no epi. Buuut.. I went in with an open mind that my delivery may not go as planned...

That doesn't mean be a push over. If you know you can do something, sometimes the nurses aren't so nice and will ask you over and over again. One nurse asked me if I wanted the epi. I said no. She asked me again, I told her to get out of my room and get me another nurse.

No I'm not doing a birthing class this time. I had my daughter in 2005 and I didnt feel I needed to do the birth classes this time. I wonder if I ask at the doctors office on Tuesday for my appt if they have a mock up...but to be honest, the way my docs office is...I highly doubt it ha

The hospital I delivered at handed me a the sheet to fill out for my "birth plan" during my free L&D tour.. I didn't take a birth class either.

Maybe the hospital has one for you? Have you already registered? If not, ask when you go..

Hey girl.. this is the site I used. All you have to do is check list everything and add anything else you want. I used it and the plan looks great!

That's the way I felt too, I never wrote a birth plan because I wanted to look back on it and say it was amazing, and if things didn't go the way I planned I wouldn't be able to say that.  I totally went with the flow and it was the easiest way to do it IMO

This is baby number two for me and I know I need to keep an open mind when I go in. With my first things didnt go "exactly" how i would have wanted ideally but i was mostly happy with the actual birth. But I want to write up a birth plan this time to hand them especially my nurse so that one, my "ideal" preferences are known and hopefully that will help us to all be on the same page and working towards the same goals etc.

Things like I wanted to go all natural last time and right when I was getting to the point of that being tested and was drawing on my own strength and trying to get through it my nurse kept pushing the epi over and over and over...later she said she wouldnt have if she would have realized my wishes beforehand etc..

Anyway I know that i may have to alter things based off of my personal labor etc but I think it will be easier for me to achieve more of what I want etc if I have the plan to revert to and know that they already have the plan and it should hopefully make it easier not needing to explain everything to each nurse etc. Also I think it will be easier to stick to my guns on certain topics with the birth plan sitting there when in the midst of lots of pain etc

Thank you for the help and the site suggestions ladies!

I know birth plans arent for everyone and I do understand the reasons some don't like them. But for me this time i think it will just make things easier for me. And I wont flip out if things come up unexpectedly and I dont get all my ideal stuff, I know that sometimes things happen out of our control and have to be dealt with   Hopefully I will get pretty close to my ideal birth this time  , but if not so long as I have a healthy baby and Im okay after I will consider it a success

I can see where you're coming from with the nurse pushing the epi on you, I'm sure they get people all the time that say no no no and then at the last minute they want it, so if they know ahead of time I'm sure they won't push you to do something you really don't want to do.  Good luck!

When I had my first son the pain was unbearable but they knew i didnt want an epidural. The nurse kept begging me to get one. I was getting so mad at her. I have a severe phobia of needles and she was upsetting me. What is with these nurses.
