Gripe Water Question
posted 19th Mar '06
OK I'm sure this topic has been discussed to death from time to time, but here goes anyway. My 5-wk son gets very fussy after feeds, more after bottles than breasts. He has shown signs of sensitive G.I., frequent hiccups etc. We burp him regularly during feeds (during each, as well as between breasts). When he fusses he's quite unhappy and uncomfortable and can't settle down. This would last 30-60 mins at a time. Nevertheless it's making our feed schedule (and life in general) tougher than need be. We've given him an antiflatulent liquid drop called Ovol to limited success. Heard a lot about gripe water but the accounts appear of mixed success.
What's the general views here on G.W. ?
Thanks.

Hi there-
We tried all kinds of things for our daughter from 3-10 weeks old. She was finally diagnosed with reflux at 10 weeks. She was put on infant Zantac and was a new baby within 3 days. We did try the GW and she threw it up. It's really for gas, not reflux. (When we tried it we did not know what was wrong with her.) There are lots of herbs and strong flavors in it.
If it's a GAS issue then the Mylicon drops are great. Better than the GW.
Make sure your baby is diagnosed properly and the pediatrician asks you lots of questions. I tried EVERYTHING b/c we did not know what was wrong with our daughter. She was fussy at the breast and would start to cry in the middle of nursing. Definitely not normal. We finally switched pediatricians b/c we were getting no where. Be assertive if you need to be.
Good luck.
Best,
F
