Does being induced hurt?!

posted 17th Nov '06
I am gettin induced on the 26th of November because Zayla is so big already. My doctor was talkin about how he was going to give me some different medicine the day before to try and get things stretched and thinned out so when he does give me the medicine to induce it won't take so long for me to have her. I just want to know if it's going to be really really painful or is it the same pain as if my water broke on it's own?! I am a whimp when it comes to pain and I can't have an epidural because I am allergic to the medicine so I am really scared. I know they will give me medicine through an IV but my pain level is so crazy that pain meds usually dont work for me, so I don't know how to prepare myself for this, any suggestions?!?!

Have you done any child birth preperaation? The Birth Book by Martha Sears has really good pain control methods.

I was induced with my first pregnancy and it was bad, but i have nothing to compare it to. I did get an epidural, but i feel like i could have handled it... My mom went natural three times and once was induced. She said the begining was worse, but it wound up the same...Just relax... the thing that always helps me with pain is i tell myself... "This WILL be over... This Will end," but i do think if you are going to do it mostly natural you should make a birth plan... it's too scary with out it!

You will do great!

My first was a week overdue and I wasn't dialated or effaced at all. My doctor decided to induce after a night a contractions and no change.

I don't know if it hurt becuase I was very much not ready to have her or if it was realted to the induction. They put a pitocin jelly on my cervix to soften it up. When the contractions started, they came hard and fast. Eventually they were overlapping.

I have a horrendous fear of needles and the thought of an epidural scared me more than any pain of birth could. So, I went without anything. The labor was 13 1/2 hours..

My second one came two weeks early. My water broke in the middle of the night. Iw as having contractions, but I didn't feel them. That labor was pretty normal. After about 8 hours they gave me something to relax me between contractions, so I would have the energy to push. The labor was only 2 hours shorter and the pushing was much harder.

I don't know if the induction made the difference or the fact that my body was ready for one and not the other. I've known other women who were induced with the pitocin drip and didn't have it it as bad as I did.

Well I have had two kids and both were induced. My first was induced before I ever went into labor. No dilation, no effacement and I was not given anything to ripen my cervix. I just was given the Pitocin via IV and 7 hours later I was in lots of pain. The contractions seemed to be hard and long. The epidural didn't do any good for me at all. Only numbed my thighs.
With my second my doctor stripped my membranes and then I got an infection and was contracting because of that. Even though I was uncomfortable it wasn't as bad as the induction. After a few hours I had dilated only a few cm's so they started the pitocin then. I could tell a difference about an hour or so into it. Once again long and hard contractions that didn't seem to end. This time the epidural was good for maybe an hour and then I felt it all. It wasn't as bad as my first but still was pretty intense. I did have IV meds though so it did take the edge off a bit but still I was glad when it was over.

Every ones induction is different. Don't worry when you are in the thick of it you'll learn figure out what works for you to cope with the pain. Good luck

I was induced and i mean the only painful thing was the 2 big contractions i had before i got the epidural lol!! Iam such a wimp with pain.. And trust me needles make me plain ol sick and wanna pass out but the contractions forced me to get it lol.. And the guy that gave it to me was wonderful.. when they were done putting everything in i was like whoa is that it!! the nurse was like yea, its not as bad as everyone thinks.. I think its just a matter of who gives u the epidural.. Iam delivering at another hospital this time and iam really scared that the person giving the epidural this time wont be so gentle.. but iam getting iduced again because i choose too ... So on May 29th the baby will be here if nothing happens before then.. And i dont regret getting iduced the 1st time either..

Well being induced itself isn't painful. It's the labor that is painful. With my daughter I was given cytotec(misoprostol) which is basically like a pill inserted into your vagina. Then about 2 hours later my contractions really started and within the hour I had a baby. So if that baby is ready, then induction can be fast. My son I was given pitocin to help the contractions along, this labor was a little longer, but at least I had time for an epidural which I gladly accepted this time around hehe. So no, the induction itself isnt painful. It is usually used to get the contractions regular and more intense and thin out your cervix. Good luck to you, sounds like it will be soon!!

I was just induced on the 17th of november. i had pre eclampsia or high blood pressure and was 37 weeks so they induced me and i felt a few contractions, but then i got the epidoral and i actually slept through my labor. they broke my water at 8:30 in the morning and i slept until 5 and was fully dialted. i pussed for 15 minutes and he came out. i guess it depends on if you get the epidural or not

i was induced with my daughter cause i was 2 weeks over due and not dialating properly.. They induced me at 7:30 am, i had them give me some pain stuff threw the iv.. i feel asleep after that.. then i woke up in CONSTANT pain.. the only releif i got was when i sat up to get the epidural and after that i didnt feel a single thing it made it kinda hard to push cause i didnt know when to push.. With this pregnancy if they have to induce me again.. i dont think i will get the epidural.. but to be induced it does bring the contractions on really heavy and and long. so be prepared for pain.. but just figure it will be over soon!
