I have no idea.

But I LOVE Ikea and I wish to the good Lord above that we would get one here.

They have such fun things - -I am looking at a set that is 2 tone blues but they have a wave in them, like Dali's melting clocks. I thought it would be so fun for a kids room. I didnt want to do wood tones, my kid isnt a lawyer yet -I was the room to be somewhere he can grow up in and have fun.

Do they use chemicals in their products, yes. Paint and plastic are chemicals, and all furniture is treated with chemicals (unless you buy it specially I suppose). That is an smurf answer, sorry.

Are the chemicals safe, I would say most likely. Never heard a complaint about Ikea's children's furniture causing any sort of disease or poisoning. I have a ton of pieces from the Trofast system and I have the Hermelin crib. They seem to be very well-made and I haven't noticed any chipping, weird smells, or anything else that would make me think they were unsafe. Ikea lists the materials used on their site for each piece. For example, Trofast wooden pieces have "clear acrylic lacquer" for the unpainted-looking ones. The Hermelin crib has "tinted acrylic laquer."

Hope that helps. I spent a lot of time browsing and bought a ton of smurf if you want to ask about something specifically.

Mammut? I liked those a lot.   FYI a lot of the pieces are plastic, like the chairs and tables. The large pieces (bed, wardrobe) are painted wood.

Thanks Star - it does help. I am concerned about the off gassing of the pressboard. I'm not really sure what type of answers I was looking for - -but I needed to put it out there. Thanks.

No prob.   The only thing I noticed any smell from was our mattress. We got ourselves a foam mattress and it took about a week or so for it to air out. So be wary of the foam crib mattresses, or at least give them plenty of time to air. (We didn't get a crib mattress there so I don't know if they have the same issue.)

Here's a page that might help for the other stuff:
http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/green-living-building/3098-ikea-used-green-builders.html
It mentions "stringent requirements about formaldehyde off-gassing." Might be worth checking into that or asking Ikea employees.

Actually, I spoke too soon. I googled "formaldehyde off-gassing Ikea children's furniture" and the results were NOT what I was looking for.

Here's something:
http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/about_ikea_new/our_responsibility/safe_healthy_products/reach.html

"IKEA is continually working with chemicals and is trying to phase-out the use of questionable substances. Some examples; IKEA has set an early voluntary ban on ... formaldehyde emitting paints and lacquers on all products (effective from 1993)."

I would email or call them to see what they say about their particle board.
