Ripped Toenail

posted 6th May '09
So yesterday Vince (who is almost 21 months old) tried to close a door. In the process he caught his big toenail and ripped it almost completely off the toe. I know, I cringe just thinking about it. So a friend of ours called a friend who is a doctor, and they said just to keep it clean and bandaged until the nail falls off. But it's still freaking me out. Anyone else go through this? If so, any advice? It's really hard to keep him from pulling the band-aid off, and I feel like it needs to air out, but I'm afraid he'll catch the nail if it's not covered and potentially rip it the rest of the way off.

I know this will probably be more painful, but maybe wrap it and put a sock and shoe on? A sandle or something to keep it covered. And then let it air out while he is sleeping maybe. Poor guy

I've been through this with my son and myself and just keep it cleaned and bandage and it will fall off in a few days, I had to keep socks and house shoes on my son so he wouldn't pick at it.

my son dropped a decorative rock on his toe once. half the nail fell off. it grew back but it tooka long time. and he also did something i cant remember to his other toe and that nail fell off too. both happened at different times. but i will say bandaids are hard to keep on a baby. his toe nails do grow kinda funny now though. i dont know how to explain it but they grow normally but they look weird. dont mean that to scare you or anything but that was just my experience.

Let it air out when he sleeps or it will take FOREVER for it to heal properly (my dad stomped on my toe and it took 3 months to heal because i didnt air it out) Just try and keep it clean and do whatever you have to so he wont mess with it.

don't let it air, it will dry out and probably get pulled again... just keep it very moist and use a larger baindaid so it wraps around more so he can't pull it, also the fabric type ones, that are flexible, are better for staying on..

My sil did this to her finger, and didn't wrap it, and it got infected, and also it kept constantly pulling back, I heard some very colorful words from her for weeks and weeks....

Jamil ripped a ton of skin off his hand (no nail) I thought it would take forever to heal but it was only about a week and it was all better.... They also said to not let it breath, since he's so young and even when sleeping it can get pulled back and also the risk of infection...

First off, I love your avi. lol. We are trying to keep sandals on him when we can so that he doesn't pull the bandaid off. I currently have a bandaid on it, and then some of the paper tape around that to keep it a little more secure. THanks for the advice.

I am a little worried about how it's going to grow back. I guess at least he's a boy. Men don't seem to worry quite as much about how their feet and toes look, lol.

Thanks   We are HUGE Steeler fans..I need to update it though. And your welcome, I hope it heals quickly. It sucks that it happened, but at least you have a boy, you don't have to worry about a teeneage girl complaining because she will have an ugly toe
