Hyperemesis Gravidarum Chat/Advice/Help..

posted 28th Apr '09
I have been seeing this more and more on here and there really is not a spot for people who suffer with this during pregnancy nor a place to get info or even just vent on how frustraating this is. I thought I would make a topic that we could use to add our stories, post what we have tried that has worked or maybe not worked and just discuss anything related to this.

What Is Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
HG is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss, malnutrition, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting with potential adverse consequences for the newborn(s).

I have had this with 4 pregnancies (currently have it) and have been PM'd about it for help or just to saythat they have/had this too. I will continue to be here if anyone has had this or has it and needs to talk, advice or help.

Another good site that I have found with tons of useful information on this is
http://www.hyperemesis.org/

Another good HG link that is informative
http://www.baby-gaga.com/outbound.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmedicineworld.org%2Fobgyn%2Fhyperemesis-gravidarum-vomiting-of-pregnancy.html&post_id=43157233

Eventually maybe we could keep this going and it can be a sticky to help others in the future that will have this and need support or advice.

Thanks!!

I'm sorry you are having to go through this mama. What meds are you on for it? Did you have it also with your last?

No, I didn't have it last time. I have been put in the hospital once, for dehydration, and spilling keytones. I am on zofran and phenergan(sp?) and b-6. The hardest thing for me is no one understanding along with my MIL having to help me with my son because on bad days I can't even get out of bed. Today just so happens to be a real bad day.

I understand, bad days are horrible but any day with HG is just awful! I have had those days too where I just cant get out of bed and cant take care of my youngest. Those are def the worse days. I'm glad you have help though cause it helps alot during this period.
How long have they had you on both meds and the B6?
Hopefully it helps you especially taking both. I'm on Zofran now but couldnt do phenerghen cause of the side effects.

I have been on zofran for about 2 weeks and phenerghen since friday when they put me in the hospital. Same with B-6. I take some sort of pill every 3 hours, which I hate having to look at the clock all day. It seems that if I'm late on one or miss one I really start to feel it. How long did yours last with your others?

Usually when they give you a combo of meds, girls do better with them. I'm glad it helps and hopefully can fully stablize you.
My last lasted until 22-24 weeks and then I just had reguar morning sickness until the end.
This one started at 5 weeks and I still have it but it is getting alot better. I will be 19 weeks this week.
When did it start for you?

It started pretty much at 5 weeks. It got horrible around 6 weeks. I wonder how many women have it on the forum?

I have seen a few topics on it but recently have been seeing a bit more. I think since most dont get it once you post you kinda just deal with it on your end and dont post too much again after since there are not too many momma's who have it.
I was in the hospital with this one at 6-weeks this time around and 7- weeks with my son.
When I had it with my son I rarely saw anybody on here that had it. I also dont know anyone in RL that has had it so it's a frustrating thing.

i know quite a few of them... hopefully they will share their experience as well. Its always nice to talk to other ladies who have been through it or are going through it.. HG causes a lot of woman to fall into depression

It really does, you get so isolated from outside life.

hi!!! I had HG with my son too. I am SOOOOO glad that there is a site like this where i can talk to others who have been through it. Mine started literally the morning after conception until 2 minutes before my son was born. I also was on three meds for most of my pregnancy and slowly weaned myself off of the phenergan and only took the zofran when i absolutely had to. Nothing completely worked so no pills were almost better for me sometimes. I am absolutely terrified of having another pregnancy like that only this time having a toddler to take care of on top of it. I would love to hear from anyone who has been through it seeing as i would like another one at some point (hubby said maybe after the summer to start TTC). It is so isolating and again i cant thank you enough for starting this topic!! I only wish i had it while i was pregnant, i totally went into a major depression. I love to chat and share stories and maybe things that worked or didnt work for people. Thanks, Courtney

I had huge fears about getting pregnant this time and having a toddler but you know what to expect if you get it again and what meds to take so you are one step ahead of the game. I made a plan of what I would do, when to TTC that wasnt around holidays, birthdays etc.. and spoke with my doc. Even though things were pretty much the same I knew this time I had medical help ready, support from family and a clear head of what I had and what worked last time.
If/When you start I would really get everything lined up cause it can happen so fast and if you can get help with you toddler ready just in case you need it that will also help alot.
