Help, My son is a sniper..

posted 28th Apr '09
My 2.5 year old son has been horrible lately
he is turning everything into a weapon, pretending his toys are guns and "shooting" anything in sight, we've tried everything and i'm at my wits ends with the kid, i mean he stands in front of the window and says "shoot peoples!" " bang!" by no means is this okay to me, he's 2.5 and is awfully violent about it! We don't have guns nor is he exposed to shows with guns here...

Any suggestions on how to get him to stop being the lone  Gunmen?

He has to be getting it somewhere... Video games?... Other children?... The only thing I can say is to figure out where he has learned this... And take it from there...

Don't feel bad momma, he probably saw another kid doing it somewhere- and now he's hooked. Thats all it takes. I'm not really sure how to get him to stop, but don't feel bad.

My niece heard a little kid say "strangle him!" and saw him make the hand motions at the jungle gym at the mall, and thats all she did for 2 weeks straight. =[

I guess you just have to do your best to teach him that is bad, and hope that its just a phase.

We are going through the same thing with Kaleb....he tries to use everything as a gun. And we have been working really hard on trying to get him to stop, because he is getting ready to start pre-k and they wont let him in if he still pretends things are guns. But anyways.....we just keep telling him to stop doing that and thats its not funny. And it seems to be working because he doesn't "shoot" things as much. Every now and then he forgets and we just remind him not to do it and he stops.

Ok sorry for rambling(sp?)

Agreed, it's got to be coming from somewhere, is he around anyone that could be encouraging this kind of behavior without you knowing it? I would be doing some hardcore investigating or something lol.

I gots no suggestions tho to stop it...other then just keep letting him know it's wrong, not nice etc. and encourage other kinds of imaginative play....ya I'm probably not much help either lol, but good luck!

my 4 year old cousin is the same way; they dont have tv, he goes to a private school at his church and he doesnt play video games...his parents have no idea where he is getting these ideas; hes actually told his older sister "mom is putting poison in our food to kill us" .....where he comes up with these things we all have no idea; were just hoping it doesnt get him into trouble because they havent been able to stop him from doing/saying things..even with all different kinds of punishment.

My sister tried the approach of not getting herboys toy guns or anything of the like (not even water guns) and they weren't allowed to watch t.v. or nothing and they still went about playing guns and cowboys and indians. Not sure where they got it from either, but....

in a world where violence is all around us, in the news and media it's hard to keep all traces of that out of kids lives.

At 10 and 11 they still do it, although now my BIL is out of the military and is around allowing them to do it more, they did sit them down and make it very clear that they can't point even play guns at people, that it's not good to even play like that... they were older then 2.5yo though. All I can say is boys will be boys...

I know I'm not help, but Good Luck!

It's tough because the only thing i can think of is that he got it when he goes with his dad, i know for a fact his dad loves the typical male action and violence movies and we've discussed it and he claims Spencer never watches them.. this i feel is most likely a lie.

Just cause your son doesn't watch them, doesn't mean he doens't hear them!

my brother went through that phase for a looong time. i don't remember when it started but everything was a weapon, even sticks. it got to the point where he got my sister to play guns with him, "pew-guns" they called them. they ran around screaming "pew pew pew!!!" at everyone. i'd say it's just a phase.
