BF and AR...please help.

posted 20th Apr
My son has AR. It's been getting worse the last few weeks. I ended up having to supplement with formula and those feedings he actually kept the formula down. I guessing because it's thicker. Soo I tried thickening my breast milk with rice cereal...his pedi approved. Anyways he still spits all of that back up. I've changed my diet and taken out everything that seems to make things worse, but nothing is working.
I'm at a loss. I want him to get he benifits of breast milk, I'm looking for some advice, maybe something that helped you in a similar situation. Sorry if this doesnt' make much sense, I haven't gotten much sleep lately.

Eeek pink eye does not sound like fun. He does fine with just regular formula. I just feel like I'm not trying hard enough to find a solution that ends with him getting breastmilk, like I'm a failure of sorts if I don't try.

Imo formual doesn't cure/helpAR at all,if in fact that is what he has. This is my second with AR,and after trying elimination, slowing my letdown, nursing upright, elevating the crib, not laying them down after eating, etc we had to medicate. With my 1st she was on Zantax (weened her at 7 months) but with this guy having a svere case(never gained weight for the first month, pooped 15 times a day, puked like crazy) he is on Prevacid.Remember AR is very very painful and can interfere with development because of improper nutrition absorbtion so if you have tried everything then I would really look into medicating to put the poor baby out of misery, and to give you back your sanity.

My 12 week old is breastfed has AR also but it wasat its worst weeks 2-8. I remember being scared she wasn't gaining weight because she was projectile vomiting all the time. The projectile vomiting got better after a couple of weeks but she was still spitting up heavily. Now, at 12 weeks she is still spitting up but not like she was. As long as your little one is gaining weight and has wet diapers daily then she should be ok.

My pedi prescribed Zantac but we haven't been giving it to her. I'd rather not use medication if I don't have to. She isn't too bad these days as long as she isn't moved around after eating.

Thank you. I have tried all of that. I'll talk to my pedi about medication.

That's why we tried the formula, aside from me not pumping enough that day. He hasn't gained weight in almost two weeks and the day before we gave him the formula, he hadn't had the same amount of wet diapers....drastically less. I don't really want to medicate either, but I really want him to get the breast milk.

I am not one to run to the docs for meds at all-my second has never had antibiotics, but I suffered from AR myself and know how painful it is-I couldn't imagine how much it'd hurt for a wee one. Also I have tried a bottle or two of formula before and all it does is make the vomit thicker-doesn't help any way else.Gl,let us know how things are,I understand the stress been there twice, lol.

I just noticed I said "she" above and your little one is a "he"...sorry about that! That stinks that he isn't gaining weight or having enough wet diapers. Is your pedi concerned? Iwouldn't mind the Zantac if it wasn't so terrible tasting. My LO hates the taste of it and since I don't feed bottles every morning and night I can't always mix it in with a feeding. She was really fussy tonight so we gave her Zantac and then I gave her a pumped bottle to wash it down.

Thank you again. I've never had it, but I could tell it was upsetting him. I hope that the meds will help him.

Lol that's ok...he gets called she a lot. I blame the hair.
My pedi is concerned, she just got back from vacation though so she just heard of the no weight gain and all that. The doc that's been on call, well he's an idiot. Out of the five doctors they have there he's the only I can't stand. Anyways we have an appointment tomorrow so she can check on him.
