Bumper pad really bad?

posted 19th Apr
My little guy is starting to move around on his own. He mostly rolls to get where he needs to get although he can pull up to he knees and scoot quite well.

We just bought him a new crib (the other was a portable) and he tried it out last night. Everytime he rolled into the rails he banged his head and started to cry. As he rolled from front to back and back to front he banged his head even harder and started to cry.

My question is, what is so wrong with using the crib bumpers nowadays? My oldest son is 10 and the other is 6. We successfully used crib bumpers with them both - no problems.

What is it about today's kids/cribs that poses such a risk that they are no longer recommended? What can I do about him hitting his head? Something has to give, but I don't want to put his safety at risk nor do I want him to keep banging his head as he rolls. How do you handle this?

studies have shown that the baby can press his face into it and suffocate, or not allow air to circulate in the crib causing SIDS.

we used one anyway.

I have used the bumper from day 1. I personally will never NOT use one..Kailee gets her arms and feet stuck in between if I dont use it.

It however is a SIDs risk, but I have a video monitor and I watch Kailee the whole time she is up there unless I am showering, so I can go move her if she gets too close for comfort.

If he can safely roll and move then he is probably not at risk for SIDS from bumper pads. If you are worried about that, they sell breathable bumper pads. I know babies r us carries them in multiple colors. I registered for a blue one myself :-)

call me a bad parent. *shrugs*

before he rolled over, i saw no danger, he was in the same spot, and once he started moving on his own he would bang his head.

Im sorry but that is funny and really cute (although scary), your bumper doesnt have ties on the bottom?

Mine has it on the top and bottom.

we always used them because with our first, she would get her legs caught in the rails and would hurt herself. i dont see how its any worse then wrapping a blanket around them which is also a suffocation risk.

Nope, just at the end. The middle ties are only on the top. Who knows why!

Yeah! This is a really big deal because as he is rolling he bangs the heck out of his head. His rolls are not really controlled. He just throws his head in the direction he wants to go and his body follows. Then "BANG" into the rails.

On the other hand SIDS is a monster we don't want to meet either.

Seems like kids today are so high maintainence. You have to handle them with white gloves and everything is some sort of risk. There did not seem to be as many rules with his older sibs.
