re: Jesus' birth in Matthew and Luke

Quoting Tid Bit:“ The only written account of the slaughter of the innocents is in the Bible, and it doesn't specifically ... [snip!] ... it. Therefore I still say that it was Herod the Great's Son, and not himself who reigned during the time of Jesus' early years.”

That passage mentions Herod's son, Archelaus. So, unless it's discussing both Herods and not distinguishing between the two (which is possible, but mighty confusing), then it's clear (to me) it's referencing Herod the Great.

Quoting Tid Bit:“ 10 to 1 she doesn't get that. By the way, have I told you lately that I love you?”

Yes, just now.

And it's mutual.

Quoting God:“ That is what inerrant means. C.”

I know what inerrant means.

But I think you are taking it out of context. The Bible is inerrant in the fact that it is written exactly as God wanted it written. He made no errors. If there is a discrepancy in time, it is an error on that person, not the Bible. God put everything in there exactly as he wanted it. I believe that. I have faith in that. I don't need to prove the Bible right to have faith in God. I believe that my faith will allow me to see him one day and I can ask him exactly why there are seemingly errors in the Bible.

So, God wanted Matthew to put in the Magi's errored account?

Yes. If it's in there, He wanted it in there. I don't know why. But I'm sure He has His reason.

"Son" meant a lot of things back then. Like I said, Octavian (Augustus) was Caesar's "son," and I could think of more examples but I'm a bit tipsy. But I"m sure you're getting my point.

Maybe he's testing you to see if you'll actually take the time to try and figure it out?

I do.

And I'm jealous, heh.

Though I'd prefer weed to alcohol.

Whoever said the bible doesn't contain any contradictions was full of shit!

All that damn book IS is a shit-ton of inconsistencies and contradictions.

ETA: I've developed this opinion over the course of many years from having the christian religion forced down my throat by "well meaning" christians.

Okay, I've been trying to read this and get this for a while now.. (I'm so slow, its not fun, especially with big words everywhere).

After doing some googling, (because I do believe Bible written by men inspired by God and all that).
The Gospel of Luke links the birth of Jesus to the census. However the Gospel of Matthew dates the birth to the reign of Herod the Great, who died in 4 BC, nearly ten years earlier. According to Raymond E. Brown, most modern historians acknowledge that Luke's account is mistaken.[11]

Gosh, I hate extra links.
Although I do wanna say this.
Well first, I guess we can't say that the entire Bible is not 100% flawless. ETA: or as I always called it, confusing? (read more replies). However, when I have seen people do simple mistakes when they're feeling the Spirit of God. I've witnessed it in my church a couple times. (yet, I think with Luke, it was a small mistake... with a bit of an impact).
For example, prophets mistaken your name (pretty funny sometimes). One had mistaken dates with me (or at least so far, I think he might have).

But yep. How did you run across this?
