Toddler's kinky type hair..what products to use? everyone.

posted 26th Mar '09
hello,I have a 2 year old daughter who has kinky hair. I was wondering what are the best products to use for African American tots hair? I main question is, "is it ok to use products that I use for my own hair. I would like to use olive oil products for her hair since I use them for my own. I want to use the olive oil shampoo, and the olive oil gro therapy(hair grease) and the olive oil hairdress formula. from Palmer's. I used it once on her hair a few days ago and it seems to be ok. Also I would like to know is it necessary to condition a tots hair after washing?
Before I was just using products for kids but figured why waste money on my two different types of products for our hair if we could share.
Any info would be greatly appreciated, however I would really like to hear from those with African American children. or children with kinky type hair.
What products do you use? and what do you know about the procedures in taking care African American girls hair and keeping it healthy.

my baby is only half black but maybe this will help: i use the pink lotion on my daughter but she is a year old. i like to use it b/c it stays in her hair longer than other stuff. her hair soaks anything right up! at dollar general they sell a detangling spray and hairdress call soft n precious its made especially for black babies. just for me also makes a hair lotion and their creme conditioner is great also.

You can use the same products you use. Definately, always conditioner her hair. My fav hair product is Generic Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo and espcially the conitioner (you find it at Sallys). It makes my hair so soft and you can just finger comb the hair with the conditioner in it and you wont have any tangles. I also use Wild Growth Hair oil, some hair the smell but my hair is to my bra. I keep it simple and basically only use those 3 products.

C&P'd from a PM I sent another member.

I stick to light products like Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil and Pure Aloe gel (Right out of the plant or pre-bottled from Fruit of the Earth) for really dry baby hair. Also, braid her hair at night after heavily conditioning it. I don't know how much you wash her hair, but nothing more than once a week, though you can condition it about 2-3 times a week if you'd like. I love The Organics line, Aloe shampoo and olive oil conditioner. Those are easy to find, at most Walmart's and Walgreens. To find some things online, for more heavily textured hair I highly reccomend Carol's daughter, the HairMilk is amazing, Some of Marguerite's Magic cures breakage instantly and the black vanilla leave in conditioner makes your hair look healthy again for biracial or spanish textures Mixed Chicks is great the sahmpoo, conditioner and leave in are all good. But, I ADORE the leave in for my daughter's hair, it makes it shiney and soft. Stay away from anything with any kind of alcohol in it and petrolium/petrolitum and mineral oil will kill hair, it actually locks hair from absorbing any moisture. If you feel like getting really green, you can use fresh aloe, jajaba, coconut and other "live" oils, etc if you can find it.
