Natural Birth Support Thread!

posted 21st Mar
Our goal here is to answer your questions about natural births, and help you understand that birth is not an emergency! Birth is an all natural experience and is something women have done for thousands of years with out hospital rooms or epidurals or pain medicine. Birth is not something to be hidden away in some deep dark corner and never talked about, this is the birth of your child! This is the entrance of your child into this wonderful world.

We are NOT here to make you feel like a failure if you didn't have your child naturally. We're about education. Make an informed decision! Read through some of the facts and articles, talk with some of our members (quite a few have had both inductions and natural births) and decide what's best for YOU!

Facts:
*Your body is built for natural child birth.
*OB/Gyns are trained surgeons. Surgeons. They're not trained in birthing. they're trained in cutting!
*Countries who use mainly midwives for child birthing have a lower infant mortality rate.
*Respiratorydistress is 17 times more likely in hospital births than in home
births.
*Infection rates of newborns are4 times morelikelyin a hospital birth than a home birth.
*Iinfant mortality rate for non-nurse midwives attending homebirths was 1.9 per 1,000 compared with the doctors' rate of 5.7 per 1,000.Certified nurse midwives' mortality rate was 1 per 1,000.
*Prenatal visits with a midwife are relaxed and can last between 30 minutes and two hours. How long does your OB stay to answer your questions?
*Women aloud to move freely around while in labor experience less back pain. Also, being able to move increases the effectiveness of the contractions.
*OBs frequently break your water which puts a time limit on the labor, as the likelihood of a uterine infection increases with each passing hour in the hospital after the water is broken.
*25% of women deliver via emergency c-section after OB's medicallyinterveneby breaking water and administering laborenhancingdrugs (pitocin, etc)
*No drug given in childbirth has been proven safe.
*Women given drugs in the hospital report a high risk of PPD.
*Fewer women die fromhemorrhagingand infection in home births than in hospital births.
*America ranks 37th in the world for quality of it's health care.
*Birthing is a hospital's main source of income.
*America has the 40th highest infant mortality rate in the world.
*Every year, 1 million, or about 20%, full-term, healthy infants are sent to the NICU for "observation" for an average stay of 3 days, totaling a whopping $6,000. For an infant thought to be sick, this cost cantriple.
*33% of all hospital births have anepisiotomy, while it's onlynecessaryfor less than 10%.
*American women who choose to have an epidural are four times more likely to have a c-section.

I want a natural birth only because the doctors/nurses ALWAYS mess up when taking my blood or putting in an IV. I don't want them messing up with an Epidural.

WHy??? Repeat C-section is more risky than VBAC statistically.

In some states, isn't it illegal?

there's a ban on it here due to malpractice issues.

Because a lot of doctors will not do VBAC's. With all the malpractice suits I think they would rather not chance it.

So because a doctor doesn't want to get sued, a woman can't have a baby the way she wants?  What are they going to do, throw you in jail?

I don't know. People are so sue happy now a days that the doctors would rather do repeat c-section's then chance a rupture in the incision area with the heaving pushing.

Except, according to statistics, the odds are higher of severe complications with the repeat C section than from a VBAC... so it doesnt make much sense.   Although docs like C-sections because they are able to play the "hero" a lot better... and they are in control, whereas during natural birth, they are more the observer.

Some doctors will do VBAC's and will go over very carefully in detail what is needs to be done for a healthy baby & mommy, but some most definitely will not. I assume it depends on the reason/s why you had a cesarean to begin with. I will have a repeat cesarean in August, maybe even July. I have had a lot of pain in my incision area this pregnancy and with all my medical problems recently.. I wouldn't even want to chance a VBAC. It worked best for me, but for others it may not.
