Welcome to the World Wyatt Aleksander
posted 18th Mar
On March 12 I went into the hospital because I was not feeling well, I had actually started bleeding, big no no in the world of being pregnant. I had just started week 26 of 40. My doctor did not like what she saw so she decided to admit me. I was 1.5cm dilated and 80% thinned out. Neither of these items were good. So they admitted me and started a 24 hour urine collection on me. While they were doing this they were watching my blood pressure shoot through the roof. They could not get it to come down no matter what they gave me. Dr. M and Dr. D came to me on friday and said straight out.... you cannot keep Wyatt in you anymore, you are essentially killing yourself, you blood pressure is out of control and your protein level is over 9000 (only allowed 300). The decision was made that if I did not progress any further along then they would take him by c-section on saturday. My condition got steadily worse on friday. My entire body started swelling any the doctors were having a hard time finding veins on me. Saturday morning dawned and I was told straight out, we are taking him or burying you.... and at the rate you are headed we may end up doing both anyway. At this point I had the patient advocate come in and fill out legal paperwork.... what to do with me, him, and us if I could not make those decisions anymore. At noon they wheeled me into the delievry room and gave me a spinal tap. Wyatt was born at 1329 on March 14th, 2009. He was 2lbs 3oz and measured 14inches long. When he came out the anesetholigist said to me, "can you hear that?" I was mostly out of it but I could hear him crying, I remember nodding my head and not waking up again until I was in the recovery room. Because I had such problems with all that happened with this pregnancy and the past ones we did a tubal ligation at the same time. Wyatt was immediately brought to the NICU and I was immediately moved to the ICU. Both of us began our fights. It took them until monday to get my blood pressure under control and essentially give me water medicine to force my body to stop the swelling and let go of some of what it was holding. I did not get to see Wyatt until monday. When he came out he was fighting the cords and anything that they put in him to help. Intially they did not put him on a vent because he didnt need one but they eventually put him on one so that he could breath easier. they started with the C-pap machine and moved to the vent. By the time that I left the hospital on Wednesday they had him to the point where he was almost able to breath the air that we would (21% oxygen saturated). I will not kid you or pull punches... I have a ways to go before I am healthy again... and he has a fight on his hands to get him to be able to even be picked up... let alone come home to me. The first time I walked in and saw him i was in tears... there was my son, that I couldnt do a thing to help and I felt like such a failure because I couldn't protect my baby longer. Each time I went to see him it go alittle easier to sit with him without falling apart. I started pumping milk on sun/mon to help him because as soon as they think he can hold some of the breast milk they will give it to him. He is a little fighter. He is bigger then his age and he fusses about the cords, hates wet diapers, and opens his eyes and looks at me when he hears my voice. I am not one to usually ask for prayers, pleas or the like but I am not asking for me, I am asking for this little man that I love so much that needs anything anyone has to spare. I will keep you updated on his progress.
