how much throw up is normal?

posted 22nd Feb '09
Okay..
I have a 3 month old son, he is a very good eater.
However..
Every once in awhile after a feeding as he is laying down. He will start to cough
or burb then all of a sudden he will start to throw up. And when I say throw up, I mean it is pouring out through his mouth and nose. He is my third kid, Iv'e never seen anything like this before. He looks terrified when he is doing it, and after wards he screams bloody murder. Its like he feels like he is drowing or something. And when I lay him down to changed his drenched clothes, he acts startled similar to the newbornstartled reflex.(if you know what I mean)I have to hold him close for a long time to calm him down.
Its happen to him about a hand ful of times. Of course the first time I said somthing to the doc and he acted like it was normal.
It freaks me out!!

Has anyone experienced this??

My daughter is 16 weeks and does that sporadically. It will come up through her nose and mouth and she screams and tears stream down her face. Sometimes formula doesn't settle right on their tummies and it happens.

yep thats why i kept him with me at all time..it was stressful and hard. But i wasnt going to risk it.
They say that babys can handle throw up like that..bc they turn their heads and it goes donw the sides..but still i dont like not being there.
My son slept on my chest for about 5 months..
Keep a bowl next to you guys and keep him held up if he is laying down on his back.

that's NOT true. it can be a temporary gastrointestinal malabsorbtion issue related to a growth spurt if there are not any other symptoms. or it could be a food allergy if the baby is breastfed.

my daughter did that the other day. it was the first time i've seen it i was scared shitless. it drenched her whole outfit and the changing pad cover. same thing she was on her back when it happened....
i had an upset tummy all day so i thought maybe we had a bug. probably what it was but i called my pedi and he said it could be one of 3 things:
1. temporary intestinal malabsorption caused by growth spurt
2. food allergy like dairy or something via my breastmilk
3. a virus

and not to worry about it if it stopped and she seemed fine otherwise.
but of course now every time i hear her cough or start to spit up im terrified its going to happen again.
