How to DONATE (not bank) Baby's Cord blood
posted 14th May '07
I have some information here for women who want to donate (not bank) your baby's cord blood. The differances between donating and banking are:
- the cord blood can be used for research and transplants instead of being stored indeffidently
- the stem cells found there can be used for research in liue of human embreos
- it costs you nothing!
A good point to remember, though, is if you choose to donate instead of banking, you may or may not have access to it in the future.
Your hosptial may or may not be a participant of donating but here are some differant banks that you should call:
For an up to date list of hospitals and banks visit www.marrow.org/cord
or call 1-800-MARROW-2
If you can't find a bank in your area or your hosptial doesn't participate call 1-800-627-7692

This is great advice. I plan on doing the same! Its a shame that doctors do not educate their patients on this. This could save a LOT of lives.
Thanks for the extra info!

Thank you so much, this seems like very useful information! I would love to bank my baby's cord blood for him, as I have many auto-immune diseases, but the cost is unreal. I know they say you can't put a price on a life, especially that of your child, but who the hell can afford it? I'm saving and hoping I'll be able to, but I'm definately going to check into donating it in hopes that it get put to good use! Again, thank you!
