I have a problem, my daughter doesnt speak (long!!)

Hi gals,
Just a question. My daughter is now 20 months. She doesn't speak at all. I mean not real words. She just babbles. She can say Dada, Dadi, (which is grandpa and grandma in our language), and a few other words. She understands EVERYTHING!!!...i mean she understands some things that im shocked at how did she understand?? When we tell her to say something, she doesn't repeat...It's like she has no interest. She just doesn't want to. She does take a pacifier. Anyway, my annoying MIL keeps on saying that it's because of the pacifier that she doesn't speak, that because she sucks on it and that makes her tongue muscles weak (rolls eyes)...well she doesn't take a pacifier while she's awake, only when she has to sleep in the afternoon and at night...so basically while she's sleeping. I've asked her pedi, my BIL who is a doctor, another one of my friends who is a doctor, also the lady that works at the play group that I take my daughter to...and they ALL have said that she will eventually start speaking, or that she'll start speaking all these sentences. BUT my MIL is always like "why doesnt she speak...its dangerous that she doesnt speak because her brain will be developed and her tongue wont be (rolling her eyes and saying WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!) anyway, I live with my MIL...so I have to suffer this EVERYDAY...could someome please give me some thoughts on what u think about this? Is it the pacifier thats not making her talk? Should I really be worried? I mean, I have a neice (my BIL thats a doctor, its his daughter...so my sisters daughter), and she didnt speak properly until she was 4...before that she would just ask for things by pointing at them or going uh uh uh....my daugher sort of screams a bit too when shes asking for soemthing...like she feels frustrated...what do I do????

Tell your MIL that she just doesn't have anything to say right now. Don't worry about it, she's still young and will start eventually. My husband didn't really talk until he was in grade school and he's one of the smartest people I know.

I highly doubt she's not talking because of the paci...especially since you only give it to her when she is going to sleep.
It's probably that she's just not ready to talk. Or that she just doesn't want to preform for everyone by repeating what you guys want her to say.
If you're really worried, you could take her to a speech therapist, but I think 20 months old is a little young for that. After working in day care for a year now, I've seen kids that can talk pretty well, pretty young, and others that barely say anything and they're over 2.
I say just wait it out a bit longer, she'll talk when she's ready to.

well my BIL also said that theres this peice of flesh under the tongue that sometimes needs to be cut if its too short, and that happens when someone cant stick their tongue out too long, but my daugher can stick her tongue out all the way upto her chin...lol...and yea i do feel like punching her in the face...EVERYDAY...im fed up with her...grrrrrrr...and here in Germany we also have evaluations like every few months...they have like 10 or 11 evaluation appointments, but Aiza's is all the way in June. I have asked her Pedi and she said its no big deal...are u talking about a speaking evaluation or just a normal evaluation?

thats exactly what i tell me MIL...im just like shell talk when she wants to...but she keeps on saying that her brain will become fully developed and her tongue wont and thatll like make her stupid because she understands everything but doesnt talk and so therefore shes made this theory that her brain is working perfectly fine but her tongue isnt...
?!?!?!?!...is it just me or does that sound retarded?!?!?!

i have two friends, both BG members, and both of their sons have already been evaluated. Both around 17 months of age.

the way I look at it is, what's the harm in getting things checked out? If everything is normal than you can tell your MIL to STFU but if something is wrong then you have started the process of helping your child early! Either way it's a good outcome.

well...in germany u dont need to be referred to a specialist...u can just go straight there...so should i just go to a speech therapist?

Ehhh My 19 month old speaks ( some you can understand others you can't) but he points and screams for stuff. He will pick up his sippy cup and take it to me LOL. He also has a 7 year old and 6 Year old brother so they do ALOT of talking for him. Which I am trying to nip in the butt. He says "oh look" Uh- oh I love you, but his vioce is raspy and husky that you really can't understnad him, it's one of those mommy can understand and no one else LOL. I am sure she is fine. My oldest had a speech problem and was diagnosed at 2 1/2 and I see the difference between the two. So just hang in there. Your MIL will always think that she knows better, I have learned to sit their and nod and just say ok, But in all reality I just ignore them, I actually told my Mom yesterday " you kow I just ignore you guys righ" LOL she laughed and said " I figured, I did the same to grandma, but we are grandparents and have nothing better to do" LMAO good luck !!
