Travel with work

posted 10th Feb '09
I just found out that I got a job I interviewed for a couple of weeks ago. It's a government job (Environmental Health Manager II) and the benefits are great and I'm really excited...except for one thing.

There is a national conference two weeks after I start that I would be obligated to attend. It will give me a better idea of how the agency works and how to do certain aspects of my new job. It will also give me a chance to get to know my new co-workers. The bad part is that it's in CA (and I'm in SC) and it's for a week.

My daughter will be 11 months old at the time and I'll have to be away from her for a week! My husband will be able to handle it just fine, so I'm not worried about him, but I'm a wreck. I know that she'll be fine and it will probably bother me more than her, but still!

For moms who have traveled without their little ones, level with me. How bad was it?

honestly... once i got away from him and the initial shock was gone i was secretly pleasantly happy! It was nice to have a few nights to myself, vegging in a hotel room and getting a full nights sleep.

I haven't slept for an entire night in 10 months (before she was born).

You were also my "It'll be OK" person when it came to daycare. You're always good for a pep talk  .

When my son was 8 months, I had to leave him for 6 weeks to go to school (Air Force). It was so hard, I think I cried almost the full 16 hour drive. The first few days was SSSSOOOO hard. But between getting pictures everyday and keeping myself busy, I eventually was okay.

It's good to hear. I'm so nervous about having a new job AND leaving her in the same month.

It's a bit different because I mostly take him with me.

Unfair (to me, that is)!

That's great you can do that. Two little ones with will be quite a feat!

haha... the truth is babies are resilient! It hurts us more than them.... you deserve some time to yourself too and why not get paid while you do it?

I'm so unfamiliar with time to myself, I won't know what to do!

Who watches him during meetings? Can you take him everywhere?
