It's funny how much the baby carrier market has been exploding with new stuff in the past few years.
There's slings, front carriers, back packs, and weird transitional models as well.
Really, I don't think there's a set way to go. The best advice I can give is that you identify what you're going to be using the baby carrier for. E.g. you want to be carrying your child around the house... or is it just for hiking?
Also, the weight and size of your child is key in deciding what sort of carrier you want.
When it comes to new borns/infants you're not looking for a backpack-- slings and front carriers with head support are your best options.
The Baby Bjorn model is good... I've used it and yeah, it's fine-- you have your hands free, but it takes practice getting it on properly. I'm not sure it's the answer to every parents baby carrier prayers, but it's good. Still, maybe overpriced when I think about it.
Slings are fun if you've got one that's easy to use and secure. I used one that felt quite comfortable but would need continuous adjustment over time as it felt like it would start slipping after a point. (I don't remember what the brand was).
I'd recommend cruising
baby-center as they usually have a fairly good selection and have managed to weed out the less quality models.
Good luck!
