re: Febrile Seizures (occure in 1/20 children under 6!)

posted 20th Apr
Sorry, forgot to update. The doctor says it does sound like he had a seizure. I took him in anyways, I'm a worry-wart. She checked him over again but says he's fine.
His fever finally went away, and now, exactly one year to the day later, he's getting the same symptoms. He's wheezing and coughing till he throws up, and choking on his phlegm. Last year, he was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. I have yet another appointment this afternoon to get him checked again. I'm praying it doesn't develop into pneumonia. Last year I was told it could be a yearly event with him. His father had asthma, my sister and aunt have it, plus they say because Ben is thick-chested (he's a big boy) he has a harder time with chest colds.

this is a great post! because they are scary as hell! my daughter is now 21 but just thinking about the ones she had when she was small make me shake! I feel for all you ladies! after hers i was afraid even to be alone with her when she had a fever! how stupid is that. but really was scared. ever after that i was constantly checking her head and checking her temp. it was so bad she started walking around at the age of 2 and feeling peoples heads for feders lol. well here is the story incase you want to read it, i tried to condense sorry

she had A LOT of ear infections! and always with fevers! hated them! but when she was about 13 mths old she got one, and it was in the middle of a snow storm. so my mom said lets wait till the storm passes a little and we will take her to the er. well out of nowhere, all the sudden her eyes roll back into her head and she stops breathing! IN MY ARMS! her body went droop I flipped! I was only 18 and i was scared to death! I throw her at mom and a friend of my moms was there she called 911 while my mother was giving her mouth to mouth on the kitchen table~ I thought I WOULD DIE! all I could do was run around the house screaming mom dont let my baby die! please God dont let my baby die! I ran outside barefoot in the snow to flag down the ambulance! my mom got her breathing before they arrived. went to the hospital in the ambulance for them to send me home like you said with a piece of paper that said febrile seizures, and told me that she would have started breathing on her own. (i was like yeah we are supposed to watch and wait for that, NOT) her next one was about 2 mths later, i was traveling from maryland to va beach to move there. and i stopped at an er because her fever was so high, it scared me! so they got it down gave her a shot of antibiotics and i left. in the parking lot all of a sudden she wouldent look at me, then her eyes started rolling back into her head and I screamed, ran back into the er with her limp body once again in my arms screaming! got sent home again antibiotics another ear infection! febrile seizures. they did eeg's and determined normal brain function, I was worried because my brother had epilepsy, hoping it wasnt that and my child wouldent be faced with a life time of convulsions. they put tubes in her ears, and she didnt have anymore untill she was 3 she went to her dads for a visit in maryland and she had one.. i got a call in the middle of the night that she was taken to the er by ambulance because she quite breathing. I had to hurry and get there because once again she was going to be discharged and him or his family refused to take her home! haha. yeah such a big man. so i had to get her from the hospital to bring her home! that was the LAST one she had THANK GOD!! needless to say I think i created a hypochondriac because everytime after the first one she had a fever I flipped out, watched her like a hawk if it meant staying up all night and she slept with me untill she was 3. I ALWAYS had a thermometer under her arm or in her mouth as she got older! It created a freak in me! lol meghan only had 3 and yes they are the SCARIEST things to watch EVER! this is 20 years later and like I said I still shake when I talk about the experience.

you never get use to your kids having seizures. its different when its someone else because you somehow manage to stay calm and do all the right things but when it comes to your own child you just go into meltdown (well i do anyway) its awful

Umm i cried everyday the WHOLE day when my son had one and after for a WHOLE month. I was so upset i was making myself sick thinking he could have another one ANY TIME---even in the middle of the night!! I even missed my period for that month. I STILL check my boys every single night but for the whole month that my son had his (1) i checked them all the time--every 5 minutes i had to check him even in the middle of the night i wasn't sleeping well.
BUT
I finally realized that no matter WHAT i do if it's going to happen it is going to happen and i thought that and now--i still check them but i am just more aware.

I wrote last month about Ben having a high fever and a seizure. Well, Friday morning he woke up at 3am and he was burning up again! 103 degrees. I don't want to take him in right away, because they will just send me home. I did call though, and was told to watch for rashes, breathing difficulties, etc. Lastnight his fever was high again, and he stated having big tremors. I've tried to google it, but it always comes up with febrile seizures. Are tremors the same as seizures and should I be worried? It's kind of like a big, almost violent shiver. It scares him and scares me. I'm packed and ready to head to emerg if needed, but his temp is down to 100.7 now, so I thought I'd give it a bit. My mom and MIL say it's "normal"...but they're from a different generation...when it was "normal" to give your child whiskey for teething! ;)
Any advice??

Well after Dylan had his seizure and we were in the Hospital--he had a few of those.....Idk if they would be considered Seizures......I think it's just the body's way of dealing with the rise in temperatures....I'm not sure though =/

Sorry!

Okay thanks. I think he's okay now, his temp is still down around 99-100 so I'll just leave it for now. I did call emerg and they said to bring him in this aft if I get worried. I might do that...I'm such a worry-wart.
