Cerebral Palsy Diagnosis

posted 3rd Feb '09
Yesterday my son had an appointment with his neurologist and was diagnosed with Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy of the left side. It doesn't really change anything that we have been doing cause we already have him in a developmental program but it was just kinda hard to hear... I mean it doesnt change out we feel about him or his progress... he has lateral intraventricular hemorrhage... which in through the center of the brain on the left and right side... he has a grade four on the right and a grade one on the left...

I you have any dealings with this please let me know and tell me your story and conditions... maybe we can help eachother get through it...

I'm so sorry! My husband is on a bowling team with a friend who has Cerebral Palsy. The guy is really funny, he works in a gym actually. We took a trip to Reno in December and this man (he's 35 I think) and another friend had so many wild and funny stories from before our other friend got married. He's just a happy guy, he has a crutch/brace to help him walk but I have NEVER heard him complain. He doesn't feel sorry for himself or appear to think less of himself.

the only issue I really see, is his mother babies him. He is 35 or older and beacuse his mom takes care of him and always has, he has to explain everything to her. I know she loves him and wants him to be happy but in some ways I think she thinks of him as a child.

Medical conditions and treatments are changing all the time, I think everything will work out for you and your family.

best wishes!

I don't have experience as a mother, but I'll share the experience I do have.

I met a girl in elementary school who had severe CP. She ended up being my best friend. She was shy and self concious but with a little encouragement she would try anything and she was a very happy person. I moved away when I was 10 but have thought of her for more than 10 years - that's how big of an impact she made on my life. I recently found her again through Facebook and she's doing wonderfully. She got a service dog which helps her live independently and she is genuinly happy. She's always had great friends and I think a good family and support system is what helped her get to where she is. Her parents always made sure to treat her the same way they did her siblings. I hope that your son is able to find the same strength in friends and I'm sure you'll provide him with the foundation he needs as family. Good luck to you!
