One kidney smaller than the other?

posted 3rd Feb '09
So, when I moved from Cali to North Carolina, the hospital forgot to put my last US results in the file they gave me. The doctors here just got it today. And apparently, my son has one kidney smaller than the other. I have to see a specialist now and they are going to do another US so they can check his whole body. And, well... NO ONE told me of this in CA. I am beyond pissed at them. They have "forgotten" to tell me of not only this, but an abnormal pap. They also had no clue about a disease I have; just never heard of it. My obgyn here seemed very upset when I told her all of this.

But, my question is... has anyone had a US come back with one kidney smaller than the other? If so, what happened? I'm really worried.

I have not. I think this is a better alternative than not having any. I just had a friend lose her baby b/c of that.

Sorry to hear that. I know most adults have one kidney bigger than the other, usually the right kidney. I don't know anything about babies having a different size kidneys though.

I know you can be born with only one kidney and live your whole life perfectly without knowing it.

How much different in size are the kidneys?

I was born with 2 kidneys. One was fully formed and one was not.

I pretty much was potty trained like every kid,and still wetting the bed at 10 yrs old. I couldn't really sleep over at people's house b/c of it. I got UTIs all the time and finally no medicine worked. So I went to a lot of doctors and finally ended up at Children's Hospital here in DC.

Now,Mama...please don't worry and get upset but they decided removing my left kidney which wasn't correctly formed. It wasn't a fun surgery and recovering from a major surgery at 10 was a bitch.

But I am 24 and completely healthy. It pretty much fixed itself. Sure,I have to watch myself and if I have a kidney infectionbe more agressive with it. Watch out for UTIs.

But you can lead a fully functioning life. I get a blood test done once a year to get everything checked to make sure my kidney is okay.

Wow. I am very glad you are okay. Thank you for the information. I would be more calm if I understood anything, or if someone had told me beforehand. I had a feeling that UTIs would be more common. How about kidney stones?

I only got to talk to a receptionist today about moving my US. No one has told me anything else.

I've had none but obviously with one kidney you gotta watch your calcium in take.

I am also lactose intolerant (completely unrelatable to the one kidney) so I'm not eating cheese and milk by the gallon full.

I have yet to have kidney stones.

I had one infection since the surgery and maybe 3 UTIs (one only this pregnancy and I didn't even know.)

I don't drink caffienated sodas/coffee,and you can't expect the kiddo to play rugby...haha. I did field hockey and soccer fine.Aside from the scar on my left side (it was about a foot in length at 10 and has progressively faded over time),you'd never know.

You just have to be SUPER agressive with it. My parents had no clue what was going on. I was always getting UTIs,and had issues with extreme back pain...all kidney related.

Darn. We already set up a sports theme.
Yeah, my husband's mom was an EMT and knows a lot about stuff... so she can help out with that. And I was worried about kidney stones, because I get them. Ugh. Life without cheese must suck.
It'll probably disqualify him from ever joining the USMC though, or anything else like that.
Thanks again.

That I don't know as far as the USMC.I would ask around though.Maybe he can't follow in Daddy's steps and may have to choose to go another branch.

They said nothing like Rugby for me but I did fine with Soccer and could've done women's lacrosse too.So he can't play football...baseball would still be a go.

And who knows...your kid may not wanna do any of the above. Ahhh children

I'm just saying all of this to not stress you guys out. No one wants their kid to have ANY medical issues...but this is something we know a lot about and many people fully function with this.

Maybe go online and get some info from the Kidney Foundation online? http://www.kidney.org/

Thanks. Yeah, and there's a 50% chance that he has my disease, neurofibromatosis... so this is just another thing to add to the list.
I love soccer.   I was the goalie

Yeah I understand.

I just read today in a Parenting magazine that if one parent has IBS,it is pretty much a given the kid will have it. I have it,so here's to years of my kid getting sick after every meal...woot!

Our lives just get to be a bit more exciting !
