I am also starting to become serious about photography and editing pics (another reason I made this thread).

I also have learned a lot by dabbling and learning how to do things on my own through trial and error, I think thats important...You can follow a tut, but if you mess with it and understand what each function does...you can apply that to other techniques and so forth...but each has their own learning style..

That's how I learn too. I can't stand trying to follow tuts. I get lost quickly! I much prefer learning at my own pace, and "mastering" a tool.

I've learned more by trial and error then anything else. I had photoshop for a lot time before I even touched it because it was SO overwhelming haha.

hhaa me too!! I had CS (as a gift) and rarely used it because it was so difficult for me and because it was easier for me to do things in Jasc Paint shop pro 9 *before it was Corel*

Ok ladies...what would you guys like help with?? What is something you are currently trying or would like to figure out?

Change the color of something! its driving me bananas as it never tuns out the way i predicted, so if anyone knows how to i will looooove you forever hehe

It depends on what it is, but I normally use the color overlay option and adjust the opacity.

Like COMPLETELY change the color? Give an example

In Gimp, you can select the region where you want to change the color with the lasso tool (either the free select or the magnetic). Under the color options it has something called colorize. You can then adjust the color to whatever you want it to be.

Not sure if Photoshop has something similar or not, since I haven't had a need to use a feature such as that.
