I was a noob in high school and we used glass pipes, metal pipes, wooden pipes, apples (shut up) pens (shut up again) any kind of bong (even ones we made in pottery - my teacher was big time hippy   ) I just wanted to get high haha!

Yeah, the THC goes from solid form to vapor form, and you inhale it, without inhaling any burning plant material.
