re: Epidural Information: pls read before getting one!

Thank you so much for posting this. My older sister Dorian has four kids, and when she gave birth to her first two she had issues with her epidurals. First time she didn't have any pain relief and remained nauseous during the rest of the labor. Her second birth, the baby's blood pressure kept dropping, which needless to say was a scary situation.
And now I'm ten weeks pregnant, and trying to do as much research as possible to make my upcoming birth as comfortable as possible and I'm honestly terrified because I used to joke and say I wanted to be "drugged up" if I ever gave birth, but after my sister had those rough experiences and I'm now pregnant, I'm trying to take things more seriously.

I've have three HEALTHY babies using an Epidural all three natual no c-section and no vaccum or anything and i'm about to have my fourth any day and i plan on using an epidural again. YES some mothers do get some of the signs i think the only thing i had was the chills, but thats it. my first i was in labor for 36 1/2 hours my 2nd 20 1/2 hours and my third was 8 hours so it just depends on the doctors and hospitals and everything

I am with you. I have had four children and I breastfed fine and was able to push with every last child. I just think people do whats best for them. The information was great to know, but not everyone goes through the same things and it may not be the Epidural alone that cause these affects. Plus all my children are healthy and very intelligent. Its ok if this is the way a woman chose to go.

My due date passed on the 7th so im schedualed to be induced on sunday night. Until now i hadnt given much thought to other options besides and epidural but i have heard so many horrible stories in the last 24 hours im begining to reconsider. this is my first (and last) child and despite words of encouragement i dont want to do this without some other form of help with the pain. please if u could (and as soon as possible since i only have a few days left at most) help me with alternative choice because im pretty clueless on my options. epidural cant be the only one. HELP!!!

I gave birth Tuesday. I stalled out at 7cm and I couldn't take the contractions anymore. I got the Epidural after being told the risks and benefits. after it was inserted and the medication took effect, my body was allowed to relax enough to go from a 7 to 10 in less than an hour. I pushed without assistance and only had a superficial, external tear. The only side effect I had was the shakes.
I hope those who do get one have a positive experience like I did.

I just wanted to share my story. I had an epidural with my LO, and as a result suffered bilateral femoral nerve damage. This is a rare complication that my OB had never seen. My quadriceps were paralyzed and numb for about 3 months, which meant I was unable to walk or carry my baby. I stayed in the hospital for a week, and when I left I needed a wheelchair and a walker and in-home physical therapy. It was utterly embarrassing to have DH hoist me onto the toilet, etc.
The epidural was not exactly the direct cause of my injury though. The injury was caused by staying in the lithotomy position (on your back with legs pulled up) and being unable to feel my legs going numb during pushing. If I had not had an epidural, I would not be confined to that position, and I would have felt the numbness before being injured.
I have connected with a group of moms who've had the same injury, and the extent of the injury and recovery time varies widely. I was very lucky in comparison to other women.
I'm not trying to scare anyone, but I do want everyone to be aware that the risks are very real (albeit rare).

I had none of these problems also, just a alergic reaction to it

I'm really glad some one posted this!!
I looked into it a while back and decided to go with an all natural birth because it would be best for baby.
A lot of people say that it's fine and that they haven't had any problems with it before, but it's the risk. Like eating raw eggs (in cookie dough or something). You can eat it and you and baby will most likely be fine, but it's that tiny risk that it will go wrong and problems will occur. Some risks bigger than others, obviously.

With my first child I got an epidural, they messed it up and it only numbed my left side from under my armpit to my hip. I felt alllllllllllll the pain! This time I'm not bothering asking for an epidural... ALL NATURAL!

I cant have an epidural. So I guess I never had to worry about this. I've had natural twice. Epidural maybe bad for some but think about this also..if I would have to have a c-section they would have to put me all the way under and my husband wouldn't even be allowed in the room. At least with a regular c-section if needed the mother can be awake with an epidural and the partner can be present also..
