I signed the form when I went into labor with Dakota. I thought that a woman could not give birth without it. But my doctor was kind of behind on the time, and before the epiduralist could make it to the hospital, Dakota was almost out. As soon as they put the needle in my spine, Dakota popped out. So there was really no point in even getting the epidural. I figured that I gave birth once before without an epidural, so I'm not gonna go that route when I have this baby.

i would just like to share my story...first and foremost from the hour after she was delivered (i ended up having a csection..) and until forever..when someone asks me what the worst part of childbirth was..i would most def. say that the Epidural was the worse ever!!! and I put getting mine until my contrations were practially on top of each other and almost off the charts..

Please make sure your local anisteologist (im sure thats not spelled right but you get the hint..) knows what they are doing..because now that we (the babys father and I) look back..we really think ours did not. He came in to do the epidural and i sat on the edge of the bed and 'arched my back like a cat' as he said..THREE times he poked me and it was horrible..not only did I bawl like a baby..but it felt asif somene was threading with a sewing needle the inside of my back down to the top right side of my bottom - even after the three times it didnt work and he tired one more time.- this time ialmost instantly got theheadache that is refered too and i heard the anisteologist say 'oh we're finished! This is where the story goes from my my babys father says..he said that almost instantly I hit the bed like someone had knocked me out my pulse and the babys heartbeat drooped and the nurse ran to get the oxygen when she didnt get a response. he said i was out for two hours and he thought myself and the baby were going to die that i looked so bad. the nurse stayed in the room the entire time and kept telling him that this was all normal...they told him this was a recovery period and everything was fine. when i woke up i couldnt swallow and felt like something was in my throat. and i couldnt move from the neck down. it took another hour before i could move. finally they did a c-section because the babys heartrate was continuing to dip. the nurses and the anisteologist all told me that everything was in my head. once in recovery my nurse told me she thought that he had given me too much of the medicine and Id overdosed!!!!

i'm not trying to say you're wrong or anything, but I read in a book of mine that labor can progress faster with and epidural because the mother is not in pain and can focus. It just kind of confuses me because you're post says it slows it down. Both sides seem to make sense to me though. I guess it may just depend on the mother and her L&D..????

Yeah, everyone told me that too. It's bs that you need it. What did women do for thousands of years before epidurals? They just had their babies! You can do it. It's better for your baby and probably even better for your own recovery if you avoid it. It is also likely that you will be more proud of yourself and have a better experience if you don't get the epi.

My friend had an epidural, but she had a C-section and nothing went wrong. I don't think I'm EVER doing an epi. I haven't yet, and never will.

ive read in countless other places the risks of an epi, which are mostly posted here--there are benefits, but only for certain situations. i dont plan on doing it...i already have a high risk pregnancy. Ive worked in the medical field for a couple years now and hear more cons than pros....but it is a touchy subject.

thanks for posting this...

I just delivered a baby boy on July 29, 2009 and I had an epidural. I went into the hospital and had my water broke because I was overdue, and after going through 4 hours of labor I decided I'd had enough and wanted the epidural. I hardly even felt it. They gave me a shot to numb me and then did it...I never even felt it. I didn't feel any contractions at all for the rest of my labor, and I was in labor for 12 hours total, and pushed for only 30 minutes. I did not encounter any problems during or after the epidural. I didn't even feel them take it out. My back was a little bit sore for a few hours after, but I'd rate it only a 1 on the pain scale. I think it's a great thing for people who don't want to have to go through the pain of contractions. Everyone reacts to it differently though.

I have delivered three times and only one time did I have an epi. The last time. I will neverdo it again. My baby is now 9 months old andmy back still hurts from it. It was the worst thing I have ever done. The pain of labor and delivery is nothing compared to the horrible pain I have every time I move into another position and the ache that is always there. And slight itching is an understatement, I about scratched through my skin. I was even scratching while pushing. I scratched for days. This is after the doc put in medication into the epi to help keep me from itching.

For me, the epidural was great. I had no complications. My skin was numbed with a topical cream so i didnt feel the needle going in my back and didnt feel myself getting the epidural at all. Before the epidural, i was having contractions every 2 min so I didnt even get a break from one to the next. I didnt get to enjoy labor at all until i received the epidural. i could no longer feel any pain at all and i was able to appreciate my baby in my tummy for the last time. the epidural may not work for everyone, but it was great for me.
