re: Certainty

posted 20th Jan '09
I used to think about this all the time. I've always wondered if I'm actually where I think I am or if I'm somehow in someone's imagination and my life has been in a snow globe, haha. ...and then I'd get teased about it.

I'm a hundred percent certain that I will die.. and pay taxes.

Interesting subject, C.

Here's an example of how the things we can touch are not always correct in the sensations we receive.

When we touche a flame, we pull our hands back and proclaim that they were burned. We rub the red, dried skin the flame created. The reaction to this burning is to remove our hand from the threat.

At the Baltimore Science Center, they have a display that gives this burning sensation, but there is no heat involved. Instead, there are alternating bars of warm (and I think) cold bars. When your hand is placed across these bars, you will jerk your hand back immediately, thinking you were burned. However, there is no heat, just a sensation. It doesn't look hot or feel hot (in a reality way), but it sends messages to your brain that your hand is being burned.

This is a perfect example of someone proclaiming the sensation of a burn, but when you measure the tempeture, it's not hot at all. I have to admit, I was too afraid to touch it, but my husband did. Even though he knew it wasn't really burning his hand, his brain was sending pan messages through his body and he couldn't leave it on there for more than a few seconds.

How do you know your senses are telling you the truth about it?
