Any teachers, social workers, SLP's, or ppl in dietetics?

posted 15th Jan '09
I was wondering if anybody on here is one of the above? I cannot decide what I want to major in/have a career in but I have it narrowed down to those choices. I am looking for ANY information on these from people who are already working in the field or are majoring in them. pros, cons, salary, job opportunities, educational requirements, typical work day, satisfied with choice?ANYTHING!!!! I really need to decide what I want to do with my life lol. I don't want to pick a major until I KNOW 100% that it's what I want to stick with.

Question specifically for teachers.....is it better to get a master's or is a bachelor's degree sufficient? I know at OSU you HAVE to get a masters, so I was curious.

My thoughts on some of these:
teacher- what I always said I would be. I tutored kids all throughout school and loved it. In elm., middle, and high school i had so much confidence though because i was always one of the "smart kids." When I went to Osu (and was surrounded by tons of other "smart kids" that were WAY smarter lol)I lost some confidence in myself. IDK, it just makes me doubt myself for this position. I think I'm just worrying myself.
social workers- all that I have talked to have kind of turned me away from this profession. they all say that it's very rewarding but emotionally draining (and basically to go into something else). I LOVE LOVE LOVE to help others though. And this might sound odd but I also like to do paperwork lol (I've had a couple of office jobs)
SLP (i do not want to be an audiologist)- I met with one that worked in a school for special needs children and was instantly convinced that it was the perfect job for me (in this setting, it incorporates a lot of my interests). However, I took a class at OSU and HATED it. The contest was SO BORING (part of it was the professor though). I just don't know if I could make it through all of the classes (if they are all so boring) with good grades.
Dietetics- i took a dietetics survey class and LOVED it. I'm not sure which field I would want to go into though.

Any info that you can give is appreciated

I started in school for social work and my cousin is head of Health and Human services in a major city.....Honestly I have never seen anyone make it out alive. If you look hard at the laws there is not a lot you CAN do (which is why I dropped it!) If you love paper work perhaps a career in health administration?

I can't really help that much, but I was majoring in elementary education (until I transferred to another school which accepted me into their school of education but SURPRISE they didn't actually have one so now I'm majoring in art, hahaha)...but ANYWAY...

Teaching is different EVERYWHERE...as in each state has its own requirements.  The salary varies greatly depending on where you are (the county that I am in right now pays higher than the county directly next to us).  You would have to look at websites for the public school area you plan on teaching in (they have salary sheets posted...it'll also tell you what you will get paid according to what type of degree you have).  I do know, though, that (most) private schools do not have as many requirements to become a teacher as public schools do.

I hope this helps a little!

yeah, that's the type of stuff I hear a lot. All of the social workers I know work in Columbus though (omg Welfare there is a MADHOUSE!!!!). I've never been able to get an opinion from a small town worker. I had briefly looked at health administration awhile back but I figured it would be hard to get a job? I've never looked at it in depth actually!

I have never heard of an Educational Paraprofessional lol.
That's exactly what I DON'T want to happen...get stuck doing something I hate. Everybody keeps telling me to go into nursing but I would NEVER want to be a nurse. I don't care how many job oppurtunities there are. I just want to make the right decision. Mostly my heart says teacher though

I'm in the social work field but not a social worker (looking to become one though):

pros: it's super rewarding, the pay isn't bad (they started me out at 40k+/year), It's pretty "laid back" where I work

cons: can be emotionally draining, people assume you want to take other's kids from them

typical day for me involves tons of paperwork and bedchecks (I work in a group home) I'm 100% statisfied with my choice. I only have an AA but to get to the position I want I don't have to have anything more than that as long as I have experience in the field.

OT but a group home? I was practically raised in them! I was offered a job (when I was in school for social work) in own run buy an staff from when I was a resident who is know the director...but I could not look those kids in the eyes..I knew what was I there....the sadness eats me. You must be strong to be in that environment. Kudos!

My first major was social work. A year and a half into it I realized it wasn't for me. Our proffessors drilled into our heads how you can't get attached to the people you work with. You pretty much have to show no emotion. That would be way to hard for me!

Noooow my major is Elementary Education. I LOVE it. I'm been a student aid each semester and it is a lot of fun. Pay isn't that great, but honestly I don't think money is everything. As long as you are happy that's all that matters!

Yeah, I work night shift right now but I want to go into Youth Advocacy. I really like it here, it's not all that tough to do for me.
