Help! Fluid retention after c-section opening wound?! How lo

posted 13th Jan '09
So, December 23rd I had a c-section and the birth of my little girl. Its what is supposed to be the most amazing time of your life, which it was for a few days. I got to go home Chirstmas Day.About a week later I was in the shower and when I got out I had looked in the mirror for some reason and spot caughtmy eye that didnt look normal. I aske my mom and she said to call the doctors office seeing I had been in there just 2 days earlier and they said i was okay. I called and they said to come into their office for an appointment in an hour, as soon as i hung the phone up fluid came gushing out and it freaked me out. I put a kotex pad over it got my mom and while my dad watched the baby we went to the doctor. I had so much fluid i had to change the pad over the incission 3 times on the way.
When I got to the doctors office they siad that it was because of fulid retention that the wound had opened back up and so all they can do is stuff it with gauze and have a home health nurse come daily to pack it until it heals.

Okay, I accepted that and here I am 2 weeks later, the c-section was 3 weeks ago today, most mothers are healingvery well. The nurse just left and the wound is still almost 4 inches deep. WTF???? The nurse said maybe another 2 months of vistis.... Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how long did it take to heal? The doctor said it isnt a "common" problem but does happen to some people, I just dont know any so I figured I Would give this a try. Thanks for any help!!!!

Ok I have had 3 c-sections and NEVER had that happen? With my last one I had a 1/2inch spot that kept giving me problems but it never gushed fluid? Im no Dr. but that sounds like an infection waiting to happen plus I would be scared to death it would open up or something? IDK mama, sounds kinds hinky to me IMO?

See, I thought it was infected and they put me on 2 antibiotics to make sure it doesnt get infected and thats why the nurse is here. I want to believe in my doctor, i mean she was part of 2 major surgeries for my sister who healed fine... But Im not sure so, im trying to see if anyone else had it. The spot you had was it opened deep or just accross? Now it doenst have that much fluid but they say it has to heal from the inside out. Im not a doctor so I am clueless!

I had an incident like that with my 1st c-section...just not as bad. I had a little dime sized pocket along my incision that didn't close up right away and it too drained clear fluid. My Dr just had me keep it covered with gauze and clean it twice a day with anit-bacterial soap and a q-tip...it healed in a couple of weeks without any problems

The spot I had was deep and it did drain some. When they do the section they really aggrevate(sp) everything down there causing it to swell up so some drainage is normal. They told me as long as it was clear or pink it was fine, oh and didnt smell, green or yellow is bad of course. The fact they put you on an antibiotic is great, make sure you take them like your supposed to. I would just take it really easy and be VERY careful as to how much activity you do and it should heal up just fine mama! Your Dr. knows what they are doing I suppose, the whole situation just sounds pretty scary to me

I had my baby boy on Dec.17th and the samething happened to me so you are not alone I know exactly what you are talking about. The same exact way happened to me just that mine opened 10inches long and 4 inches deep which was almost the entire incision. The nurse also come everyday to pack or dress it as they say. Now they say it's 2inches deep and about 5inches long so it's healing but that is all they say it takes time to heal which it's getting alittle annoying at this point because I feel that it is taking forever. By the way it's also a pain in the butt to have to be waiting around everyday for a nurse to come and going to doc's once a week can't wait til all this is over

It is VERY annoying to wait around. The problem with mine they said it the opening at the top is not that wide, yet the opening underneath is between 4 & 6 inches depending on which way. Now they are afraid the top layer is going to close before the underneath, that means they have to cut it open again i guess. Hopefully I will know more today after the Wound Specialist comes. They said yesterday that it looks like it will be another 4-6 weeks. BLAH!
Well, i hope you are healing!!!!

that happened to me. Mine was open for6 months and i had to have two surgeries. they finally figured out they left a lap pad in me during the c section and thats what caused it not to heal.

no they havent done cat scan. i just hit my 2 month time of it being open. I still have nurses come to pack it with silver nitrate becasue it started to get infected. I have a wound specialst once a week and I go to a wound clinic once a week. Shitty thing is I am supposed to go on vacation in a few days and so I have to pack it all myself. I was told another month or two. I cant complain much anymore, I have my daughter. I go Mirena put in yesterday and so for the first time I actually felt the packing. UG... That sucks they left a lap pad in you. Hell, if i don tget better soon I will demand a scan! I just gotta say this gets old!   glad your doign better

I hated being packed. I had nurses coming to my house everyday & all the doctor visits... it was so aggravating. I wasnt even at home for my sons first christmas.
my lawyer says a scan is something a doctor should do in like the first month of seeing that the incesion isnt healing.

are you still draining?

Yeah it is draining bad still. They sent me to a Wound center and they started packing it with a different silver product and the stuff pulled out because it was so saturated so I took a shower and saw the packing had come out. I went to re pack it since they have taught me how to do it seeing I leave for vacation in a few weeks and the damn opening on top went from 1 inch to .2cm in that two days but underneath there are two tunnels that are like 3cm deep each. UGGGGg... the wound center told me to just cover it up, my nurse came and packed it really good so it doesnt close up. The new silver product they are using actually comes apart. My nurse was irrigating it with the syringe and this huge chunk came floating out the day after the wound center packed it. Im guessing on Tuesday they are going to have to cut me open AGAIN for the 3rd time. I just wish this damn thing woudl close.
Now thay my OB/GYN is not the doctor and has handed it over to the wound care doctor I dont know what they are going to do. I will have to let you konw more on Tuesday. I know im still not supposed to be going upstairs and down them but I started to get my stuff and the babies stuff packed up and getting help carrying them upstairs to our rooms. It it toocrowded where we are sleeping and plus last night was the first time my baby slept in her crib since she was born, and she is 2 months and a week almost! It was AMAZING! She slept all night!

you should ask for a cat scan. They would cut me open and say "oh...it looks so much better, it should be healed in a week." But it kept on draining . Did you get tested for staph? I had that also & that can cause it not to heal.
Im sorry you have to go thru that on a vacation.Iknow its a big inconvience if yours was anything like mine.

My son has never slept through the night & he will be 7 months in a week.
He wakes up 3 or 4 times a night.
I cant wait till he does,

Well, I am seeing this wound center and no longer have a nurse coming daily. They have tested for staph many times and I have been on antibiotics now two times for other things. I had a UTI and now I have a kidney infection so they dont think there is an infection. But, I am still dealing with the opening. It wants to close up on top so bad but underneat it is staying the same. I go tomorrow and I wuill see what the doctor says.

I guess I am lucky with my baby girl. She will be 3 months tomorrow and she is AWESOME, sleeps through the night and is for the most part HAPPY!!!! Hope your ddoign well
