I was offered them and declined. For the right person, they do help. But their are no long term studies on them, or the children that receive them. What is your history like? Normally 17P shots are started around 18 weeks or so.

my first pregnancy was perfect and deliverd at 39 weeks. This one was pretty good until I started to feel pain in my uterus and he seemed really low. My doc checked me yesterday and I was 1 cm dilated. and when I walk contractions seem to start

Hmmm, from what I remember, the shots need to be started before the problems to prevent them from starting at all. Are you on bed rest? Have they discussed a cerclage? I'm guessing they would fear the cerclage tearing. I think bedrest and oral medication would probably be more effective, but of course that is for you and your doctor to decide. Are you being seen by a perinatologist?

I have not thought about alot of this. I never thought I would have this problem after a healthy full term baby. I don't know what a cerclage is... I am on bed rest!

I can imagine. A cerclage is a surgical stitch placed in your cervix to keep it from opening. It works with incompetent cervix but I don't think it's usually used for dilation.

Well...the shot can hurt. I suggest you research it as much as you can. Although very rare, there is a deformity of the penis that can occur as a side effect of the shots. It's also a female hormone so who knows what the long term effects will be to the child, especially a boy. These are the reasons I didn't get the shots.

I had my son at 33 weeks so this time around I am getting the shots. I am started them at 20 weeks and will be 24 weeks in two days. I looked up the side affects and I think getting the shots def. outways the risk of having a really early baby. I have not had any bad side affects so far.

that's good to know. I had my first yesterday and felt really tired. Did it do that for you?

I hope it stays that way for you! The affects I was worried about weren't the immediate but the long term. I wish the FDA would approve them or at least look into them!

The one I got last week made me really tired but it should only last a couple days.

I know what you I was worried about the long term affects as well, The deformity in males my sunt baby was born with it and he is fine so I just felt like it was worth that risk rather than having a 25 week premi. I am 23 weeks and already showing all the same signs as I was when I had my son.

So if you're showing all the same signs, does that mean the shots aren't helping?
