Physical, occupational and speech therapy

posted 21st Dec '08
Bayleigh is almost 9 months old. She has yet to reach very many milestones. She sits up alone, if we set her up, (she can't pull herself up to sitting postition) and she started to clap and says mama, dada and baba. Those are it. I get tired of people making stupid remarks about what she can't do. Does anyone know about any early intervention programs for babies? I don't know if she needs physical or occupational therapy. Or both. Any suggestions?

Cecilia has torticollis and our Dr referred us to First Steps...that's what it's called in Indiana anyway. It's a federally funded program. Any child under 3 who needs any kind of therapy is helped. Based on a sliding pay scale we only pay $3 per session and they come to the house and do the initial screening for free. I don't think you HAVE to have a Dr referral, but it's helpful.

Her left eye doesn't track correctly. She has to get glasses for that. She is physically healthy. She was born at 4:44 am and at 5 am the nurse was done in the room with her and left. She didn't check on her again. Then at 7:30 the day nurse came in and said that she looked odd. Took her out of the room and her Oxygen sats were in the 60s. So we knew there could be a chance that she would have damage. I just didn't think she would. I was optimistically naive. She lived, so I believed she would be fine.

i may be wrong, but i think insurance will only pay if she has been referred by a doctor and it is very expensive.

Here's the link to Missouri's First Steps. Our experience has been wonderful! I would highly recommend contacting them even if your Dr. doesn't refer you!

Do you mind me asking why? Was it because you noticed delays? My Dr. said that 6 months was too young. So I got pissed and asked him when would she be old enough for everyone besides her mom to realize that she's behind? Should I wait until she's a year and not crawling? He told me that I worried too much. I'm switching pedis because I want a Dr that realizes that I've done this once or twice and know a little about being a parent.

Our insurance didn't pay even though she was referred by the dr. But it goes on a sliding scale. I didn't figure we would qualify...we don't qualify for ANYTHING like WIC, but we are only responsible for $3 per session up to $24 per month...not bad, really!

In the old days it was called "wryneck" She holds her head to one side because the muscles in her neck tightened from being held at a strange angle in the womb. She has been in PT for 6 months and is doing great. Her therapist is planning on releasing her as soon as she starts walking because she has made such strides.

I hadn't heard of that. Congrats though. I'm so glad that she is doing so well.
