breast feeding questions..

posted 28th Nov '08
ladies I need some help, I 'am trying to breastfeed and having some worries/problems. yesterday I finally got my baby to latch on and that is going great, but i'am worried she isn't getting enough. Before I was pumping and I knew how much she got and was on a schedule, now she is sleeping longer and I don't know if I should wake her up to feed or let her let me know when she is hungry. Plus she isn't eating 2 oz all the time, I know sometimes I don't pump that much both breast combined so when she is on one breast and falls asleep I feel she isn't getting enough. She stays on for like 5-10 min.. Ugh.. I needs some words of encouragement and advive
I guess my questions are..
how much did you pump together when your baby was a week old?
did you wake your baby up to eat?
how long should she stay on the breast?

I'am srry this is long, I feel like i'am doing something worng and worried all the time

all babies are different..some babies are "business" eaters that get on there and chow down for 10 minutes and are done, some babies are "lazy" eaters and will be at the boob for over and hour and still be hungry
If your baby is gaining weight and seems content then she is getting enough.
Also why are you pumping already?
they say not to give them a bottle until later on to just feed from the boob at first.

and it's normal to worry and be concerned we all are, this is new territory to most of us. HUGS and hang in there momma you're doing great!

when she was born she had trouble eating, she the formula feed her and they said start pumping every 2 hrs so I did,she wouldn''t latch at first. i finally got her to yesterday. the reason I'am still trying to pump is to make sure she is getting plenty

Try rubbing her face whenever she falls asleep to get her to wake up and keep sucking. Make sure she has a normal amount of wet diapers. I could barely pump one ounce per boobat one weekunless I was engorged from not feeding or pumping for a while. Your body will produce how much she needs, just try to keep her awake for longer feedings. It's really comforting for them to nurse it would always make my son fall asleep too.

Hi, my daughter was formula fed for the first few days, and then I started pumping and bottle feeding her the expressed milk. When she was about 10 days old I put her to the breast and she started learning how to latch on. It was insanely difficult/frustrating/painful at first- but she hasn't had a bottle in 2 weeks as of today!
At one week I could pump 2 oz every 2 hrs or 3 oz every 3 hours. I pumped while she was learning to latch to keep my supply up and store some just in case and I could get up to 10 ozs at once   But most babies are able to get more milk than a pump can.
Sometimes she would need to be woken upand she would fall asleep at the boob alot in the first 2 weeks- so I would stop and burp or change her before switching sides.
I know what you mean about worrying she's not getting enough- Cora would easily eat 3 oz from a bottle but she would only nurse for 15-20 minutes and ithardly felt like she drained the breast at all- but she is doing great!
