Mirena vs. Copper IUD?

posted 24th Nov '08
I know this has been asked a million times but this will be the last time I mention it...Well asking about it.

Out of the two, which would you prefer or like better....And why?

I have my consult tomorrow morning and Im having a rough time deciding. I was afraid of the hormones with the Mirena but today my supervisor and I were talking and she said when she had the Copper it was horrible or her. She said that the Mirena had made her periods pretty much nothing and she loves it...Sooo, I just want to see this in a poll form and get some opinions...

Thanks in Advance

I cant handle hormones so Mirena was out of the qusetion.

I got the Copper IUD. Spotted for a motnh straight.

I now bleed for a day or so after having sex.
Randomly spot.
Have lots of extra discharge. Sometimes tinged with blood.
HOrrable cramping in my lower back (similar to false labor I had while pregnant).
Basically it makes me miserable like no other.

I will be getting it removed ASAP. I might go to the hospital while in Maine and get it removed since I dont have any way to pay for it.

Also dont let my experiance scare you from getting it. (just make sure you have the $$ or insurance to get it removed if you hate)

They are an awsome BC if you dont get the side effects.

I loved the Mirena I was afraid of the hormones too but it was so worth it.....no periods for almost 5 years! I did get a light one with some cramping for the first few months but after that it was all gravy baby. I decided I wanted another kid but after I am all done I will get another one for sure! My mother in law was having serious bleeding trouble with her menopause so they gave her a Mirena and it helped her imensely! I only went with that one instead of copper because I had known like 3 people who had the copper ones get imbeded and needed them removed surgically.....again it may be freak thing but it does happen. Good luck!

Yikes...That doesnt sound good at all. The cramping and bleeding was one thing she did bring up

I can't take hormonal birth control without getting insanely sick, so I plan on getting a copper IUD....Will be following this thread (and praying to not have an experience like the first person)

I think it won't be a fair poll as many people don't try paraguard. I've had both and strongly prefer the paraguard. That one week of cramping and heavy bleeding is worth it. I had weight gain, headaches and nonstop spotting with the mirena.

My doctor told me it is normal to have periods lasting up to 21days and much heavier and with worst cramping.

My periods are not bad. A little heavier than pre preganncy but thats NP and i have no cramping. But its te resto f the time that I cant deal with.

I'll be trying Paragard once Spaz is out. I'll deal with the heavy bleeding and cramping for long periods of time. That's normal for me lol.

I've never heard that and don't believe it's true. For all the things I hated about it, I did get pregnant very quickly ater it was removed. I had it out April 19th and was pregnant in May.

Well yes I do. I had it removed right after my Trevor turned 5 (since it was put in 6 weeks after his birth) in April. I wanted to wait a few months due to finances before trying. We started trying in July I got pregnant in August, August 8th to be exact (due to my husband work schedule I am sure of this date!LOL) So no it did not take me any time I am almost 17 weeks!
