I was wondering when the hunk known as Ethan would show up.... lol

What kind of 2nd are you looking to get with Ethan's diagnosis? Are you going in to see if it may be mosaicism? Cause to tell you the truth, I have thought about it with Kelly.

It's funny you say that, cause we were thinking that when Ethan was a few months old. I don't think it's mosaicism...in fact I don't really want to test Ethan (if that can be avoided) but i do want to make sure it's the "basic" form of DS and not Translocation. They told us it's not, ut my husband and I want to get tested before we try again, just to make sure. It's something we went round and round about, and it's not that we don't want another child w/ DS...it's that we want to make sure we have enough time and energy to make sure our children succeed to the best of their abilities, and right now, I don't think we are prepared for another special needs child.....so we are going to get tested, and also checking what our chances would be of having another w/ DS....

We have decided that we are going to try to adopt another child with Ds (either from the states or foreign adoption) once Kelly is in school full time. We won't be "having" anymore children though since I got my tubes tied when Kelly was born. We had actually decided on that around the 5th month of my pregnancy.

The only reason I give any thought to Kelly having mosaicism instead of reg T21, is that I get a lot of comments (even from the folks at the Ds clinic at Rady's) that she just seems so physically strong and lacks the "strong" physical features of T21.

For instance, tonight she was standing and holding on to one of her toys and I was sitting on the floor with her. I leaned forward and held out my hands and she reached for them without falling and while holding my hands took 7 steps till she got to me!!!! I am so uber excited! I think we may end up with a toddling toddler by Christmas!

Oh, that is sooo great!!! We are really working with Ethan to start cruising, but he's just not doing it...it's not that he cant, it's that he totally doesn't want to! lol he's so hard-headed...just like his daddy! lol

FYI, when I was waiting for my tests for Dominic, for DS, I asked my doctor how many couples she knew that had a second child with DS....She said in 28 years, she hasn't known even one family that it happened to twice....I'm sure it happens, but tht made me feel so much better!

so is strength related to mono ds? because we have gotten a lot of the same where people think he's very strong, and we were even told that he really only has low tone in his trunk - his legs and arms are very strong and he was holding his head up by 2 months. interesting.

I am not sure. I do know that most Ds traits are more mild in Mosaicism as opposed to T21.

Kelly had some low tone issues with her neck, or at least we thought so. She couldn't hold her head up until about 4.5 months old. But thinking back to it, I think it was more of an issue of not knowing how to use all the muscles it required instead of them being too weak to use. But once it "clicked" we were on our way quite rapidly with the physicaldevelopment. Once she figured that out, I could do the hand pull from her in a laying down position and we could pull to sit and quickly went to pull to stand when I pulled her up. Two months later she was sitting independantly and went right in to pulling to stand on her own.And now here she is almost 15 months and she is cruising the furniture like and old pro, and walking to me (7 steps) while holding my hands. I really really think she will be actually toddling by Christmas.

I am rambling.. sorry... just woke up. What I am trying to say is that even though she had low tone at birth, I think more of her mobility issues are related to not knowing how to use them not because she couldn't due to weakness.

thats interesting. we have our next ped/downs appt on dec 15 and i want to be sure to have all the questions that i may have compiled by then. i had thought that when they did the blood test at the hospital it was determined what type of ds that kogon had because the geneticist, the nicu peds, our obgyn, and all the rest involved did not think that we would be more prone to have another child with ds since they claimed bop was the run the mill t21fluke so to speak. i thought that with that blood test it would determine whether or not he had transloc or mono ds. and i had not heard that info about hte mono ds being stronger so to speak. so definitely things to bring up at his appt.

That sounds alot like Jasmine was. Her arms were always really strong. She never crawled, she used to walk on her hands and feet, kinda like a bear walk. She started walking upright, all of a sudden, on her 2nd birthday, LOL!
