Question about giving baby water?

posted 19th Nov '08
Maybe yall can help me out. My MIL and My parents all said that when we were babies they would give us water in between bottles if we got thirsty. Well when I asked my Baby's doctor he said NOT to give my daughter water because it does nothing for her. I dont know if thats HIS preference as a doctor or if you really shouldnt give babies water (we are also switching pediatricions due to other issues with him). Sometimes my daughter (3 1/2 months) acts like she is so thirsty, like her mouth is dry, but I dont know what to give her, if anything.

So what do yall do? Just trying to figure out what other mommies do!

No, you don't give babies water. It will fill her up between feedings and make it so she doesn't want her bottles and she won't get enough calories. Just because our parents did it doesn't make it right!

Your pedi is right. Babies don't need water.
It's empty calories. If she acts like she's thirty/hungry then she need formula or breast milk.

Water is fine for older babies (over 9 months), but even then it should be limited.

I give my son water... but it should never be used to replace formula. As long as you make sure that she is getting the required amount of formula every day, then she should be fine.

Sometimes my son just needs a sip of something and then he is fine.

Also he has AR and sometimes it helps his burning throat.

i used to only give my daughter water that young if she were constipated. Babies dont do much of anything to get thirsty IMO...could it be possible she is just hungry? shes at the age where she is going to growing like a weed and her appetite will increase a ton!! Your mommy tho, so its up too you of course

you do not need to give her water, there is enough water in the formula. The only time a little water may be needed is during the summer months to prevent dehydration.Other than that, no.

No, there is no need to give a baby water unless the child is constipated & needs help going. In that case 1-2 ozs. is all.
As long as the child is having 5+ wet diapers per day then the child is not dehydrated.

Everytime she acts thirsty and I make her a bottle she takes 2 sips and then stops eating, lol thats why I was asking. It seems to me like she just needed to het her mouth and throat wet. But if its not good for her then of course I wont give it to her!

you don't give a baby water...unless they are constipated...it can damage their kidneys if you give them too much water...and if she is "acting" thirsty inbetween feeding maybe she isn't getting enough to eat and is starting to want more....

No water. Babies die of water poisoning with much less water than adults. What happens is that the water thins the blood to the point that there isnt enough blood cells circulation and it deprives the organs of oxygen.

Agreed. My doctor said to give him a 2 oz of juice or water twice a day becuase he gets constipated, but otherwise they dont need it.
