Pregnancy after a placental abruption?

posted 15th Nov '08
Have any of you ladies had a placental abruption? How long did your doctors advise you to wait before TTC again? Were you considered a high risk pregnancy the next time around? Did it happen again?

I had a placental abruption on 10-22 at 26 weeks 4 days. Although my son fought until 11-13, he didn't make it. At this point, the only thing more terrifying than another pregnancy is the thought of never trying again. No child will ever replace Gunner, but I want to love another human being as much as I love him. And I feel that he would want me to give him a little brother or sister to watch over.

I plan on talking to my doctor about all of this when I go in on 12-03, but I would like some information from ladies who have been through it to think about before then.

my doctor advised me to wait atleast a year, I had it when i went into preterm labor with my son in 06 at 31 weeks , but i ended up pregnant with my daughter 7 months later, and it didn't happen again.I did however go into preterm labor for some unknown reason at 26 weeks with her.

Yeah they are fine now, my daughter really had to fight though and i had to move her to a hospital about 2 and a half hours away to a nicu unit that specialized in babies born before 28 weeks because i didn't feel that the hospital that i had her at didn't have the equiptment nor the training to treat a baby that small ( she was born 2 lbs 5 oz and dropped down to 1 lb 11oz) after i moved her i noticed a big difference in her growth. I moved her back to the local hospital when she reached 33 weeks.

They didn't tell me anything there. They said they didn't know if the abruption caused the preterm labor or the preterm labor caused the abruption... I guess I need to question the OB more whenI go in. I never had any issues in pregnancy before that. I think it's possible that an infection I had caused it. But that's just a theory.

I am glad to hear that they are both doing well now.

My doc told me that a lot of the times if you're in preterm labor for too long, like the natural birthing process the placenta detaches from the uterus, as it would after the baby is born. But it's done before the baby is out, thus causing you to hemmorage and have to deliver your baby asap. My water had broken 31 hours before I started hemmoraging.

I haven't personally had one, but my sister's second child was similar to yours. She got pregnant about 4 months later (not on purpose) and my nephew was born full term. She's had 3 children since and they were all very healthy full term babies.

One of my best friends had a placenta abruption during her pregnancy and her doctors didn't think she'd carry her baby. She now has a happy little boy. *Hugs* I'm gonna ask her to PM you.

This wasnt me personally but my sister in law, my oldest brothers wife, she had two placental abruptions. One at 21 wks back in 1990 and then another at 23wks in 1992. With the second one, a boy, he lived for a few hours then was gone. Her doctos advised her not to get pregnant for a year or two at the most and she didnt. She got pregnant with my nephew who she had in Feb 1994 and she was on strict bedrest the entire time. She delivered Austen at 32wks. and then she went on to have another healthy pregnancy, my niece born in 2002 at 38wks 3 days.
