Thanks Holtsprinzess & Katie&Clay's Mommy!
I don't think I have many symptoms of PCOS either Katie&Clay's Mommy....My weight is normal, and any extra hair I have doesn't seem too strange either! I did one day notice my hair was not the thick mane it used to be, but I read that hair loss is also a side effect of metformin. PCOS can be a very hard thing to diagnose because each case can be so different. I really didn't see any positive effects from metformin...my periods did not regulate and I had frequent diarrhea (tmi!) from the Met pills. Also it messed with my appetite making it hard to enjoy dinner each night. And if you are like me, then you will respond well to things like clomid and femara...I ovulated every time, but for some reason didn't get pregnant....maybe I had some old dusty eggs to expel before getting to the good ones   that's another thing about PCOS, you suffer from poor egg quality.

I got off the metformin about a week or so ago. I just said screw it. I got pregnant by myself the last time I can do it again. The only thing is this month I didn't get AF. It's 3 days late today. No sign of her coming. Here are my symptoms starting 4 days ago til now.
1. restless, weird dreams contantly waking me in the middle of the night
2. moodiness
3. irritability
4. emotional rollercoaster
5. points where i dont feel like being bothered by my husband (never usually happens)
6. no period
7. more hungry
8. feeling ovaries

These are just a few that I am noticing. I don't know if the metformin has something to do with it since I got off it and it's making PMS symptoms worse or what. I tried googling it and didn't come up with anything. I think if I don't get it by day 10 then I'm calling my doctor. This is too much. It's not stressing cuz I want to be pregnant but because my periods were always normal before this. Only 1 time it went 10 days late. That was right before my cyst was removed in August. It was my july cycle. I'm not thinking I'm pregnant though. I don't have nausea or anything like that. I just wish I knew why now all these symptoms and no period.

Hey Ladies, I was MIA for a lil while..but im back!

I was on metformin (but not when i got pregnant this time around). Metformin CAN help with pregnancy...but that isnt why you take it. It helps with pcos and controlling the symptoms to help you lose weight, the little black hairs on your chin, with af ect.

I'm on Metformin and I haven't gotten pregnant yet. The reason they give you Metformin is because the theory is PCOS is linked with insulin resistance which causes a hormonal imbalance. Since starting Metformin my periods have become more normal. At least more predictable. All my test came back with normal hormone function but the problem is there is such a wide range it can be really hard to tell if they are off unless they are totally whacked! I was told I probably should stay on Metformin forever to make sure it doesn't develop into diabetes. I do have a little bit of what my doc calls dude hair lol. But the Met has not changed. I'm not over weight so I haven;t lost any weight. Good luck ladies! I just started Clomid and I'm hoping it's the boost my body needed

Well ladies I can say metformin should not have been prescribed to me. My periods were normal before I started it and I was ovulating. I looked at my charts from before. They put me on it to help me lose weight since they "thought" I had PCOS. Well this is what it did to me. AF is now 5 days late and I had NO LH surge this month. So NO af and NO ovulation due to taking metformin. It screwed me up. Now I don't know how long it will be until my cycles even themselves out. I hope it didn't mess me up for more than just this month.

That is strange along with weight loss it is supposed to help with cycle regulation. I have never heard of it messing up someone's cycle.I have heard not working for weight loss or anything else. Can it have anything to do with you stoping the metformin in your own?

Whether I stopped it on my own or my doctor would have stopped it I would still be messed up. I can't find anything online suggesting it would mess up a cycle. I was told it wouldn't. I think it may have messed with my hormones and that is why I'm messed up. They may have to do another hormone screen on me. I hope they find out why it did this. I was completely normal before going on it. I should never have taken it but I wanted another baby so badly I was willing to do anything. I guess I should have asked the doc who did my surgery if it was a good idea. My regular doc knew my cycles were normal and she said it would be ok to take. When I go on the 29th I will ask every question I can think of cuz I can't deal with not knowing. I've gone 10 days late before so I have about 4 more days to go. If it doesn't come in those 4 days I guess I can it won't be coming at all. I just hope it comes next month. I will test around the time I'm supposed to ovulate to see if I get a positive opk but no matter what I'm not going back on the metformin. I just hope it's one of those meds that gets out the system fast.

I surely will. I keep having the feeling that AF wants to start cuz I sometimes get fullness in my uterine area but still nothing. I guess I should just get used to the idea that I will not have my period this month. I'm just hoping it does come back next month. But with it being this way I have no clue when my next one will come. It can come at any darn time. November can't get here fast enough. I want some answers now. I wanna know why they told me it was still fine to take and my cycles wouldn't be messed up. I mean so what if I got off of them. I got off of them because since starting them instead of getting a positive ovulation test I got total negatives. I mean I dont want to stop myself from ovulating. But since they decided this wouldn't affect me and it did they are gonna have to find a way to fix it. Better put me on something that friggin works to get it back. I'm gonna go and buy me some B6 vits this week. Maybe it will help maybe not. It's worth a shot.

Oh I found something just now and let me tell you I am not happy. I told my doc I had normal periods and I was ovulating on my own prior to my surgery. I had not taken any opks after the surgery since my periods were still normal. Even though I had normal cycles my doc (not ob just regular doc) put me on the metformin to help me lose weight. She tells me that most of her patients who go on metformin get preggo in a couple of months after starting it. So if my LH levels were normal (and I told her they were) why on earth will you give me a friggin drug that LOWERS this hormone? It basically took my normal LH hormone and made it either too low or none at all. So NO hormone, No ovulation, so NO period. I am beyond pissed cuz now it's two months down the drain, this month because of this and next month because my cycle was out of wack this month and it will probably stuggle to get back on track next month.

I have been researching this a bit because I think it's odd that they just put you on it with no further testing. I never had a fasting blood test or anything. I got diagnosed with PCOS and I did ask to go on it but it was because everyone else seemed to go on it when they got a diagnosis. I am not overweight and I have easily had 3 kids without trying. I don't know if it's because I'm getting older and it's getting worse or if it got worse from my miscarriage. You can have PCOS and have normal periods. You can have normal ultrasounds and have PCOS and you can have a normal blood test for hormones and blood sugar and still have PCOS. That being said I think now that it's being talked about more and it can be hard to diagnose I think docs just say I think it's PCOS because it's easy. From my research most docs put you on metformin immediately. For me once I got on Met my cycles became more regular. but not 28 days more like 5-6 weeks instead of up to 9 weeks. When I talked to my pharmacist she said that it will not do anything for you if you don't need it. It cannot lower your blood sugar. Met has no direct correlation with your hormones either. Most women that have PCOS have a hard time processing carbohydrates. Which is where the insulin resistance comes in. When your body is having a hard time controlling your insulin it makes you over produce testosterone and then your body over produces estrogen to make up for it. ( might have gotten those flipped) I'm not sure where your LH is effected in there. Theoretically Met should not effect your LH if you do not need Met. I hate putting foreign things in my body so taking a daily medication is very hard for me. I hope you're period starts and I'm sorry that everything is so whacked out. Have you had other cysts in the past? If you have another that could also be messing with you ovulation. I'm sure you know that though  Just out of curiosity what dosage were you on. Also I have heard of women taking up to 6 months after cyst removal to be back to normal. I know few people that had normal periods after surgery then have irregular periods for a few months then back to normal. I can't remember when you had your surgery???

I had my surgery Aug. 20th. I've had two normal periods since having my surgery. My period actually started on time just two days after my surgery so even that didn't mess with the days between my cycle. I'm not saying it's not possible to affect it still but I don't know. I was on 500mg of it. She said once I got used to it I can up it to 1000mg. So I did. I have had a fasting blood test right before my surgery. Everything came out normal. That is another reason why I don't think I should have been on it. I don't like the idea they can throw around a diagnosis like this when they're not sure. I have had one cyst in the past and that was when I got pregnant for my 5 year old. That was it. Just that one cyst. Never had any type of problems other than that. Like I said normal periods, ovulation every month on my own, two successful pregnancies, and normal hormones. If I had PCOS I would think I'd have some type of issue that would work against me interfering with my periods and ovulation. It wasn't up until I got on the met. that I didn't ovulate when before I did each month. The doc who put me on it only put me on it to help me lose weight because I told her that the other doc said I had PCOS. She didn't do any further test because she's not an ob. She just took my and the doc's word. I get so many conflicting info about met. that it isn't funny. But the one thing I'm not getting is the answers I'm looking for. But I go see my ob on the 29th so I will know if my body goes back or tries to go back to normal. My period should be coming around the 20th.
