L & D last night (kinda long)

posted 13th Nov '08
Maybe some of ya'll read about me having a burning in my lower abdomen last night, and that I kinda wanted to go in.
Well I called the on call dr and she said for me to go in just to be safe, so I called and woke my mom up for the second time and told her to come get me so we could go.
We got there about 2:30am and then I had to do a urine sample, and that took about an hour to come back.
While we were waiting on that they had me hooked up to the fetal moniter thing and I was having contractions every 2-3 min. but I wasnt feeling them.
The nurse said she wanted to check to see if I was dialated since I was having the contractions, and I was dialated to a 1. they made me drink like 64 ounces of water to try to get the contractions to spread apart some, but it never worked.
The urine sample finally came back and it said that I was starting to get a UTI.
I was in sooo much pain by then, Im assuming from the UTI....it hurt to even walk.
They checked me again about 5:30am and said that I was still dialated to a 1 so they were going to go ahead and let me go since I hadnt changed any.

So after you already dialate can you I guess shrink back before the babies born or will I just stay dialated until she decides to come??
They said that I was going into preterm labor, is that because of the UTI??

no, you cant shrink back, once you are dialated you stay that way or you dialate more....uti's if not found early can cause preterm labor, my dr was telling me that when he found one, but i never dialated because of it. hope everything works out well!

I dunno, its like the UTI came out of nowhere...I felt fine until last night at like 9 or 10 and then after that the pain just kept growing...it sucked.
Thanks!

I went into L&D because of a painful contraction. I was dialated to a 1 too. I've been having BH contractions like crazy.(6 an hour) They gave me a shot of turb and sent me home after 2 hours. My contractions are going strong again but they didn't put me on anything and didn't tell me it was PTL? What do you ladies think?

If the BH contractions are painful then they are probably regular contractions.
The shot they gave you should have slowed your contractions down or stopped them. I wish they gave me something like that but they only made me drink water.
If they didnt tell you that you were in preterm labor then you probable arent.
They told me that I was and I freaked a little...

You can go back again (it's been document some women are at a 5 or something, then someone is mean to them or they gets cared and it shrinks back to a 3 or whatever). BUT chances are you won't, you'll likely stay at a 1.

Preterm labour.. I dunno, if the contractions weren't strong enough for you to feel them AND were non-dilating, then it doesn't sound much like preterm labour to me (apart from the consistency of the contractions). UTI's can DEFINITELY make you have hard, painfu lcontractions that don't do anyuthing to your cervix.

they gave you meds for the UTI?

There was a mom on the Nov. thread whose had her baby now who was having really bad contractions every 5 minutes or so for like, a week and it was all because of the UTI. Because they weren't doing anything to her cervix they didn't give her a shot to stop them they gave her antibiotics to take and told her to drink lots and lots of water and eventually they went away.

Don't worry about preterm labour- if you were in preterm labour, you'd probably feel it and the dr's would have done something to stop it when you were in (like, a shot to stop the contractions or something).

I was thinking that the UTI was probably causing them but wasnt too sure.
I've felt all the contractions today...still about the same consistency.
Yeah they gave me some black and white capsul

My cousin said that it was wierd that they didnt give me a shot or anything.
There are a few girls in my family that never felt there contractions though...so that kinda worries me that I wont until they are really bad. I mean I've felt them today but I dont feel that much pain with them. But they feel alot stronger than when I was getting BH contractions.

that's okay- a LOT of moms don't feel the early-labour contractions, and that's totally normal. Your best plan of action is to ignore the early contractions, anyway, and try to sleep and go about your day normally so if you only start to feel them when you should start to pay attention, then i think that's awesome!

If the contractions weren't dilating you at all, then they were non-effective contractions and stopping them wouldn't have made a difference- you'd be more comfortable, yes, but it wouldn't fix anything either.

Hopefully the pill they gave you was an antibiotic! UTI's in pregnancy are nothing to mess with... Maybe give your dr. a call and see if it was an antibiotic, and see if he want to do any follow up?

Let us know if your contractions go away. I'm curious. I'm still getting them and it's really pissing me off. I don't know what to think anymore.. .

If you are still contracting, then I'd call my OB or go back to L&D. If the contractions aren't stopping, and aren't linked to an infection, then you shouldn't be having them... Are you drinking TONS of water? Sometimes dehydration can cause contractions that don't do anything.

But yeah- if they gave you a shot and sent you home without telling you anything, but you're still having contractions- then go back (or call your OB) and stay there until someone tells you whats going on, what you should do about it, and when you should start worrying...

No infections. I just have an irritable uterus. I'm drinking lots of water too! I went to visit my OB and she put me on some meds to relax my muscles. The pills are for high blood pressure and I have to go get them in just a bit. I'm hoping these help. She's going to follow up with me on Monday and do an ultrasound of my cervix I believe as well as a fetal fibronectin test! I pray, pray ,pray that all is well.

I had to look up what fetal fibronectin is- pretty cool that they can predict that sort of thing!

I'm glad they're taking it seriously, at least. That was my worry- it sounded like you went to L&D, they gave you a shot and sent you home without doing any testing or really caring all that much about what was going on. But as long as they're doing a lot of follow up stuff, then that's a good thing!
