For the CA, would you go by the shell for the 1" rule or the headrest? They'll still ramp up the headrest, right? Since the headrest extends so far above the shell, the child's head will be about 1" over the actual shell but still under the 1" for the headrest. Just curious your thoughts. For what it's worth, I think that the weight limit will be reached before the height is for a lot of kids, so it could be a non issue.

I hope that makes sense, I'm so tired right now.

always the shell   I just don't trust it otherwise......this is the reason I don't like the new smartseat, they count the headrest as well for the 1inch and it makes me super nervous
The shell is still very tall, I would say 26inches if not 26.5....still taller than a radian.

hmm maybe our car is a different year the back seat does not look like that.
i looked up 91 bonneville and it doesn't look that old lmao so i dunno.
anyways it sounds like im going to just stick w/ the safety 1st then but what is ramping??

ramping is how the child will go *up* in the seat in a collision. Like when they are rfing the seat will take the brunt force of the impact for the child because the child will push back into the seat, being cradled, but they will also go *up* in the seat because of basic physics. This is the reason for rfing the straps need to be at or below the shoulders, it helps to curb the ramping.....but it will still happen a bit as the harness stretches like its supposed to. the inch of shell at the top helps to still cradle and protect the child....if a child ramps and there's no shell/support, there is no protection so they could incur some injuries. In other countires though the seats are built and function differently so they don't require the 1inch rule.
does that make sense?

I believe they tested it to the top of the shell & it passed. This is only my opinion though because they don't release the test results.

It's totally up to you to decide what rule you are comfortable with using to determine if the seat is outgrown by height.

united states companies don't release their specific test results.....we can *assume* it passed because they are putting it in the manual. The only crash results i've seen for seats in the united states are very basic ones, they offer data that to US would make no sense and there are a lot of variables. Then they give a pass/fail rating....nothing else specific. They don't release them to the general public because it would become to confusing for the general population to understand, each is different for each company.

As andie has said it is up to you to decide. each persons opinion will be different, i can say that out of all the techs i've talked to only 1 has said they would use the seat to the top. I know andie frequently visits carseat.org so maybe she has some insight from that site and techs on there that is different

I've just read some threads with people's thoughts over at c-s.org that helped me decide what I was comfortable with. Also, my little guy has miles to go height-wise (short torso) & I am pretty confident that he won't max out the height limit first.

what did they say?? i'm curious?? i'm much to anxiety ridden myself to go past the 1inch but if i heard some positive feedback about it i might consider supporting it for my parents that have the seat.

You can put a tightly rolled towel in the bight (crack) of the seat as well. How old is your little one? What seat are you trying to install?
