I spent the first 5 months of my pregnancy without insurance. I was just going to pay for it all out of pocket, until I found out that my job offered insurance at a discount rate. They also don't care about pre-existing conditions. So from now on they are covering my pregnancy. Make sure you look into that. Mine is only going to cost me 50 dollars a month and it comes out of my check so I won't really miss the money.

Well I have insurance but it doesn't cover maternity whatsoever..so what happens? can I still use it for office visits? I just recently got the insurance so I don't know much about it.. I don't know if I'll just have to pay it myself or try to get CHIPS perinatal insurance cause I won't qualify for medicaid.

I don't have insurance, I'm kind of worried about that. It's like more than 500 dollars just to have a baby I'm guessing.

ReadyToPop....Its more like 15,000 dollars just in hospital bills, not counting your doctor bills. Plus more if you have complications during the pregnancy. Don't forget the anesthesiologies bills if you get an epidural.
500 isn't even close to the cost....you might want to try and get Medicaid real quick!

News for medicaid people. I'm six months pregnant and I've had Medicaid all along and although they do provide the necessary care, perhaps I shall say the minimal necessary care (better than no care), you should be careful to NEVER assume that they know how to do their job. For example, I assumed that I didn't have to turn in a "redetermination packet" because I assumed that since the paper work showing that I was pregnant and therefore in obvious need of their services was already in the 'system' it wouldn't be necessary but I was wrong. Now I have to hope that they hurry up in with their paper work which may take up to a month and cause me to skip my regular prenatal app. so that I can continue receiving my health care. Bummer because if this doesn't work out I join the statistical number of women pregnant and uninsured. But this goes to show that by no means are American insurances practical, efficient, or at times even helpful. What I would like to know is that if Canada can have free education and health care without being the world's most powerful country what does that say about all the uninsured, under insured people in the greatest world pwr, America?

I am military wife so I get medical care if you can call it that?
its free at least...but with my son I got state care and they even covered my dental issues while I was pregnant....
Try to get medicaid, mediCAL or whatever for your state...especially if you are in MD it is great....

We have health insurance but it does not cover pregnancy. I am having my baby at Texas Womens Hospital, and with the delviery fee, doctor fee and 5 ultrasounds( yes, five!) , and blood work we are expecting to total to be around $10,000. Luckly my husband makes enough for us to worry about the cost, we have already paid it all off, but I didnt think about the epidoral? I wonder if that is included in the $3,300 hospital bill or not?

I have insurance, but I'm having a homebirth with a midwife, which is only $4000 (yes, covered by insurance). Think about skipping the whole hospital deal if you can't afford to pay $7000-$10,000 and however many thousands you will end up paying to an OB before delivery.

I have health insurance through my husband's job, and it covers 80% of just about everything. We do have a $500 deductible for each of us though that I have to pay before I go into labor, plus another $500 which is an estimated 20% of the prenatal, postnatal care, and what the delivery charge (natural & non complicated) that insurance won't cover. We are all ready paying over $550/month for family coverage, and all ready we have bills coming in left and right from 2 ER visits that I have had. This DOES NOT include the main hospital bill, lab work, ultrasounds, our son's circumcision, and any narcotics I may get during labor. So yeah, even with insurance, we are looking at close to probably $5,000. in medicals before its over! I wish I could have gotten on our state's insurance, I was with my daughter, however the Dr.'s and hospitals that take our state's insurance here are really horrible. So this time has been a very nice experience, the Dr.'s are so much better this time, and the hospital is VERY nice too!

I am in Canada so I have no idea what it's like to have to pay for medical services. I can't imagine how stressful that would be.
